Santa’s ultimatum to the three misbehaving elves had been quite clear.
“I’m giving each of you one last chance. There’s a family of three sisters, from
Melbourne, Texas. They’ve all had a rough time of it this year and the holiday season
isn’t shaping up to be any better. So each of you will be assigned to ensure a Merry
Christmas for one of the sisters. Do it, and you can return to the North Pole and stay.
Fail, and you’re on your own.”
So now they were in a crummy motel in Melbourne, Texas, trying to carry out their
seemingly impossible task. Trust the guys to get the easy ones. At least the two sisters
they’d been assigned to were in Texas. Sparkle’s charge was currently sitting in a tent
outside Beirut.
Sparkle shook the enchanted snow globe she’d been given to watch Miss Jenna
Woodward. Jenna sat cross-legged on her cot, staring at the screen of her laptop
computer. She sure didn’t look happy. Santa had gotten that one right. When the
snowflakes settled in the globe, Sparkle understood why.
“Fired!” Jenna’s voice was soft so no one could hear outside the tent. “That son of a
bitch!”
Sparkle studied the email over Jenna’s shoulder. Yep, sure enough, the youngest
Woodward sister had just been fired from her position at a national news magazine.
Would Sparkle’s task be that easy? Was a new job all Jenna needed to have a Merry
Christmas? That would be a snap.
Jenna scrolled down to another email and Sparkle watched the young woman’s
eyes well up with tears. This email was from Jenna’s sister.
