THE WANING OF THE MIDDLE AGES
Johan Huizinga was born in
1872.
He was educated at
the University of Groningen, where his father was a
professor of medicine. He spent a semester at the
University of Leipzig, where he studied Indo-Germanic
linguistics. He took his Ph.D. in Groningen in
1897,
and
was for a time a teacher of history at a high school in
Haarlem. Later he became 'Privaat-Docent' of Indian
Literature at the University of Amsterdam, Professor of
History at the University of Groningen
(19°5-15),
and
after 1915 was Professor of General History at the
University of Leyden. His irst publications dealt with
Indian literature and culture, but his interest soon shifted
towards Dutch and European history. His best-known
book is undoubtedly The Waning of the Middle Ages, but
his biography of Easmus is also well known in English.
His other works include Homo Ludens, a study of the
play-element in culture; In the Shadow of Tomorrow, a
diagnosis of the spiritual distemper of our time, published
in 1935; Conditions for a Recovey of Civilization; Outraged
World; and many essays, some of which have not been
translated into English. He died in 1945.
