NOTES

*Press V/M while powering on the VX-7R = display test (turn knob)

*Press MONF + HM/RV + INTERNET KEY while powering on the VX-7R = seems to be an undocumented way to enter reset mode

*Press INTERNET KEY while powering on the VX-7R = "U" displays during the power on splash screen. When in this mode, multiple DTMF tones (i.e. #465 - stored in memory) are automatically transmitted each time you PTT (if desired) rather than the single DTMF tone used in WIRES (no "U" when powered up).

*The radio will not allow for 2 memory groups in MAIN and SUB to be scanned or accessed at the same time. However, you can tag a set of memory channels with the "preferential tag", and then scan them (preferential list) while scanning a memory group at the same time.

Some functions of the strobe LED can be switched off. For those that can't be disabled, set the colors to RGB=000 i.e. Black. Thanks Nigel Gunn for this info.
Owners Manual Omissions and Errors

Dual Watch - To cancel Dual-Watch, press the V/M key while in Dual-watch

Deleting A Channel From Memory Group - Owners manual states how to add channels to the memory groups, but not how to delete a channel from the group. To do this, go into the Memory groups and to the memory channel you want to omit, press MONf for 2 seconds, then press V/M. That memory channel now has been omitted from the memory group scanning.

AM Transmit on 6M - Go into the menu, and select AM receive. Radio will now transmit on AM. This ONLY works on 6M.

758 to 774Mhz is open in USA versions - Manual shows it as blocked.

While scanning, press monF then 0 to adjust the squelch. PTT to exit and continue scanning.

DCS (Digital Coded Squelch) VX-7R Bug

This bug in the VX-7R only happens when your in Dual Band mode using DCS. While in Dual band operation, you have a frequency with DCS in [MAIN VFO] and a different frequency with DCS in [SUB VFO]. The radio will not unmute even with the proper DCS is received. To fix this problem the DCS COMPLIMENT must be set to "Enabled" The factory default is set to "Disabled".

DCS Compliment can be turned on by:

Press [MONf], then [0] Now press [MONf] again, and rotate top knob to "TSQ/DCS/DTMF" - wait 5 seconds, rotate knob to setting #4. Press [MAIN] or [SUB] once so the display shows "Enabled". Press PTT to return to normal operation. Done.

WIth DCS COMPLIMENT Enabled, DCS works normal in mono-band operation as well as in dual-band operation.
Transmit Inhibit for Mars/Cap-Freeband modified Radios

The VX-7R does have a radio-wide PTT lockout feature; unfortunately, it does not have a channel-specific TX lockout feature. I have discovered a way to effectively cause a memory location-specific TX lockout without incurring a whole-radio PTT lockout. You must be using the VX-7 Commander software, as I haven't found a way to do it from the keypad. To set a memory location to TX lockout set as follows.

For the desired memory location, enter the TAG field value (e,g. "POLICE") and desired [RX] FREQ field value (e,g, "151.100") and any/all other field values as desired, EXCEPT set the RPT SH field to "DUP" (Odd Split) value and then set the SHIFT field to "0.000" value. Save and upload the configuration as usual. (The keyboard procedure for storing "odd splits," as described on page 47 in the v1.0 users manual, does not accept 0.000 input and, consequently, does not result in a TX lockout.) Once uploaded, dial to the memory location. Pressing the PTT results in an audible beep and "TX ERROR" being displayed. The VX's transmitter is not keyed, no RF energy, period, effectively creating a channel-specific

TX lockout.

This programming is useful if you've stored PUBLIC SERVICE EMERGENCY channels/frequencies (e.g. police, fire, ems, rescue). This programming guarantees RX-only operations on those TX-forbidden channels. The screen error provides positive proof of receive-only "mode" to anyone who may interrogate your or your radio. If in the event of an in-field/in-emergency you must override the TX lockout, then i) DIAL to the TX locked memory location, ii) PRESS MON/F key & RELEASE and, iii) while the [F] indicator is showing in the lower left of the display, PRESS PTT key & RELEASE. When you next PRESS the PTT key you ARE TRANSMITTING! No Commander software, no cable and no PC is needed to in-field/in-emergency override the TX lockout; however, the TX lockout has been permanently removed and can only be restored by again UPLOADING the programming from the Commander software
