In many ways dolphins that swim in the world’s oceans are like people. Dolphins

are mammals and must swim to the surface to take air. They also ‘talk’ to each other.

“Starting from birth, dolphins ‘talk’: sometimes one dolphin makes a sound and then another

seems to answer it, and sometimes they ‘talk’ at the same time, much like people at a party.

I am sure they say things like ‘there are some good fish over there,’ or ‘watch out

for that shark’,” says Sara Walter, who studies dolphins off the Californian coast.

Scientists are trying to find out more about dolphins’ ‘secret language’ by studying

wild dolphins all over the world. They haven’t de-coded it yet, but they are listening

and learning.
