Teacher: Today we are going to discuss the function and use of three modal verbs i.e. mustn’t, must and don’t have to. Firstly, we are going to deal with mustn’t. Now, I’m going to write one sentence...

( Teacher writes on a blackboard: ’’You musn’t smoke in here’’, reads it aloud and show picture of crossed out cigarette.)

... And now, repeat it please.

Students: You mustn’t smoke in here.

T: S could you repeat it please?

S: You mustn’t smoke in here.

T: S could you repeat it please?

S: You mustn’t smoke ine here.

( Teacher continues asking other students to repeat this sentence. When all of students finish repeat it T says:)

T: Now, I’m going to show you a few similar pictures and your task is to create sentences using mustn’t according to the pattern on the blackboard.

( Teacher shows pictures to the class, then students together form the sentences.)

Ss: You mustn’t run in here.

Ss: You mustn’t ride a bike in here.

Ss: You mustn’t use your mobile phone.

(Then teacher comes to the individual students, shows different pictures and asks questions:)

T: S tell me, can you smoke in here?

S: No, I can’t.

T: Ok, that’s right. So, you can say: ’’No, I mustn’t.”

S: No, I mustn’t.

T: S tell me, can you use your mobile phone?

S: No, I mustn’t.

T: S tell me, can you run in here?

S: No, I mustn’t.

T: S tell me, can you bike a ride in here?

S: No, I mustn’t.

T: Now, could someone tell me when we use mustn’t?

S: When something is forbidden.

T: That’s right.

S: When we are not allowed to do something.

T: You are absolutely right. We use mustn’t to talk about prohibition, when something in forbidden and we are not allowed to do something. Here it is general pattern of using mustn’t...

( Teacher writes on the blackboard: SUBJECT + MUSTN’T + BARE INFINITIVE)

... Notice that mustn’t is abbreviation for must not...

( Teacher writes it on the blackboard.)

... The next modal verb we are going to cope with is must. I’ll write a sentence as an example for you.

(Teacher writes on the blackboard: ’’She is ill, so she must see the doctor’’, reads it aloud and asks students to repeat that sentence:)

Ss: She is ill, so she must see the doctor.

T: Scould you repeat?

S: I am ill, so I must see the doctor.

( Teacher continues to ask some students)

T: Ok, now I tell you first part of the sentence and you have to finish it using ‘must’ like in the pattern on the blackboard. It is raining, so...?

Ss: Yy.... we don’t know.

T: Ok, then think about umbrella. When it is raining...?

Ss: ...we must take an umbrella.

T: Good. My hair is too long, so...? My prompt is ‘hairdresser’. When my hair is too long...?

Ss: ... you must go to the hairdresser.

T: Ok, now baby is sleeping, and we don’t want to get it up, so...?

Ss: ...we must be quiet.

T: Fine. Some girl should me at the meeting, but she is late, so...?

Ss: ... she musts hurry up.

T: Almost good. In modal verbs we do not add endind ‘s’. So, correct answer will be ‘she must hurry up’. Could you repeat?

Ss: She must hurry up.

T: Ok, you have a test tomorrow, so...?

Ss: ... we must study.

T: S could you finish the sentence: Her room is dirty, so...?

S₁: ... she musts clean it.

(Teacher to the whole group:)

T: Is it correct?

S: No, it should be ‘she must clean it’. Because we don’t add ending ‘s’.

T: Very good. S could you finish the sentence: I am hungry, so...

S: ... you must eat somthing.

T: Ok, now tell me when we use must?

S₁: When we want to express our necessity?

T: Ok, what else?

S₂:  Our recommendation?

T: Yes. To sum up, we use must when we want to express our necessity to do something and recommand somethnig somebody...

( Teacher writes on the blackboard: ’’ SUBJECT + MUST + BARE INFINITIVE)

... It is the pattern. And remember that we do not add ‘s’ ending to the 3rd person singular. The last modal verb we are going to discuss is don’t have to. I’ll again write a sentence on the black board...

( Teacher writes: You don’t have to get up early tomorrow)

...Imagine that tomorrow is Saturday, you don’t have lesson in the morning, you don’t have any other activities or classes, you don’t have any obligation, so you don’t have to get up early. Repeat this sentence, please.

Ss: You don’t have to get up early.

T: S could you repeat, please?

S: You don’t have to get up early.

T: S could you repeat please?

S: You don’t have to get up early.

T: Ok, now I’ll tell you second part of the sentence and you have to complete it with ‘don’t have to’. Go to school on Sundays?

Ss: You don’t have to go to school on Sundays.

T: Correct. Because it is Sunday we don’t need to go to school. What about worry about me?

Ss: You don’t have to worry about me.

T: Good. Everything with that person is ok, he or she is safe, etc, so we don’t need to worry about him or her. Wait for me?

Ss: You don’t have to wait for me.

T: Ok. This person probably want to stay somewhere longer, and we can go, we don’t need to wait for him. Go with me?

Ss: You don’t have to go with me.

T: Ok, then can you explain why?

S: Because person can go somewhere on his own.

S: And we don’t need to go with him.

T: What about harry up? S can you tell me?

S: You don’t have to hurry up.

T: Good, and why?

S: Because there is lot of time.

T: Right. We said sentence with you. Can somebody create this sentence with ‘she’?

S: She don’t has to hurry up.

T: Is it correct? What do you think?

S: It should be ‘She doesn’t have to hurry up.’

T: You are right. This will be the last sentence. Go to work? Create sentence with ‘he’.

Ss: He doesn’t have to hurry up.

T: Very good. The last task I want you to do is to tell me when we use ‘don’t have to’?

S: When we are allowed not to do something?

T: Yes. And also when we don’t want to do sth. Is it clear to you?

Ss: Yeees!

T: So, I’ll write a pattern of using ‘don’t have to’....

( Teacher writes on the blackboard: SUBJECT + DON’T/DOESN’T HAVE TO + BARE INFINITIVE)

...And remember that ‘don’t have to’ is a one phrase and always stay the same. Cannot be split. Thank you, that’s all. ;)
