Overview
The National Instruments SCXI-1160 and SCXI-1161 are general-
purpose switching modules. The SCXI-1160 has 16 independent SPDT
(also called Form C) latching relays with very low on-resistance and
low thermal offset. With power capabilities of up to 2 A at 250 V rms or
30 VDC, these relays are suitable for switching, routing, and
controlling medium-level signals. The SCXI-1161 has eight
independent SPDT nonlatching relays. They can switch up to 8 A at
125 V rms , 6 A at 250 V rms , or 5 A at 30 VDC, making them suitable for
higher power applications. Each channel on both modules has a
normally closed (NC), normally open (NO), and common (COM)
terminal. You can use two or more SCXI-1160s and SCXI-1161s in one
or more chassis to switch and control up to thousands of signals.
Applications
The SCXI-1160 and SCXI-1161 are well suited
for general-purpose signal switching or device
activation. For example, you can use them to
control external devices such as motors,
lamps, or heaters. With the SCXI-1161, you
can switch larger signals, beyond the
capabilities of the SCXI-1160.
Relay Channels
The SCXI-1160 and SCXI-1161 have independent SPDT (Form C) relays
with three signal connections at the front of each relay – NO, NC, and
COM. The SCXI-1160 has latching relays, so they maintain their state
on power-down. The SCXI-1161 has nonlatching relays, so they return
to the NC position on power-down. The SCXI-1160/1161 relays are
break-before-make relays, when operated within the specified
switching speed.
Description
Figure 1 is a block diagram of the SCXI-1160 and SCXI-1161. The major
functions of the module are described in the following paragraphs.

Software
All National Instruments switch modules are shipped with NI-SWITCH
software. NI-SWITCH is an IVI-compliant instrument driver that exports
the complete functionality of the switches through an easy-to-use
interface. The instrument driver API is interchangeable with equivalent
National Instruments switch modules to ensure a scaleable system
design where you can reuse the software between systems. The driver
works with National Instruments LabVIEW and Measurement Studio,
and Microsoft Visual Basic and Visual C++.
On either module, you can set or reset each relay without affecting
the other relays, or all relays can change state at the same time. Each
relay is fully isolated for a working common-mode voltage of 250 V rms .
The relay contacts have no access to the analog backplane of the SCXI
chassis, therefore the backplane is protected from high voltages
present at the contacts.

Signal Connections
For the SCXI-1160, field signals connect to screw terminals located in
the SCXI-1324 shielded terminal block, which plugs into the SCXI-1160
front signal connector. The SCXI-1324 has individual terminals for NC,
NO, and COM connections for each relay.
For the SCXI-1161, field signals connect to screw terminals located
inside the module itself. Thus, you do not need a separate terminal
block. The SCXI-1161 has individual screw terminals for NC, NO, and
COM for each relay.
For systems requiring TBX DIN-rail mountable terminal blocks, you can
use the TBX-24F feed-through terminal blocks for either SCXI module.
