Overview
National Instruments offers a variety of 32-channel analog input
modules for SCXI, including the SCXI-1100, SCXI-1102 Series, and
SCXI-1104 Series. The programmable gain and filter settings
are ideal for conditioning a variety of millivolt, volt, and current inputs.
Each module multiplexes the 32 channels into a single channel of the
DAQ device, and you can add modules to increase channel count.
Modes of Operation
Multiplexer
In multiplexed mode, these modules
multiplex all conditioned signals onto
channel MCH0 of the rear signal connector, to which you can connect
a single input channel of the DAQ device. Furthermore, you can
connect the multiplexed output of each module using programmable
switches to analog bus 0 of the SCXIbus and to other modules. Several
SCXI modules can operate in this manner with a single DAQ device.
Control circuitry also includes a Module ID register, which can be read
through software for module identification.
Each module also has internal counters for the high-speed
automatic scanning mode with any E Series product. A scan clock
signal from the DAQ device synchronizes the scanning. Using this
hardware scanning mode, you can scan channels at rates up to
333 kS/s (3 µs per channel) on the SCXI-1102B, SCXI-1102C, SCXI-1104,
and SCXI-1104C. With the SCXI-1100, you can achieve hardware
scanning rates up to 250 kS/s (4 µs per channel) depending on input
range and filter settings.
Analog Input
SCXI-1100
Each analog input channel of the SCXI-1100 is multiplexed, and then
passed to a single software-programmable gain instrumentation
amplifier (PGIA). If needed, the signal can pass through a single
jumper selectable lowpass filter. Some filter and gain settings limit your
scanning rate. Solder pads are available at each input for differential
filtering. Each channel includes input protection circuitry for up to
±25 V powered on and ±15 V powered off.
SCXI-1102 Series, SCXI-1104 Series
Each analog input channel passes through a PGIA and lowpass filter,
before it is multiplexed. With this architecture, you program the input

Cold-Junction Compensation
(not for SCXI-1104 Series)
All modules except the SCXI-1104 Series read the cold-junction sensor
from the SCXI-1300, SCXI-1303, TBX-1303, and TC-2095 terminal
blocks. The SCXI-1100 must perform a separate operation to read this
sensor. The SCXI-1102 Series can read this sensor as just another input
channel during a high-speed hardware scanning operation.
Signal Connection
A variety of terminal block options simplify connection of signal wires
to these SCXI modules. Front-mounting terminal blocks plug directly
into an SCXI module, and provide screw terminals for signal
connections. Alternatively, you can use DIN-rail mountable TBX-style
terminal blocks which connect to the SCXI module by a cable. Finally,
you can select from rack-mounted accessories for BNC or
thermocouple applications. For terminal block options, see Table 2.
Calibration
Each module includes calibration hardware to remove errors. For the
SCXI-1100, you programmatically ground the inputs of the
instrumentation amplifier, store the readings in software, and thus
subtract this value from future readings.
The SCXI-1102 Series and SCXI-1104 Series modules include a
calibration EEPROM. You can perform two-point calibrations and store
the results in user-modifiable locations. The software transparently uses
these constants to correct for gain and offset errors for each channel.
Factory-provided calibration constants are also available, and are stored
in a protected memory location in the EEPROM.
