agoodwhiskey—notthatsynthaholcrap—andhewasseriouslybeginningtodoubtthattherewas
anythinghereworthhiswhile.Atthispoint,itwasprobablyawastetohavespentthecredona
planetickettopawthroughDad’scollectionofcrapbeforeitallgothauledoftothedump.
PROLOGUE:
DIAMOND IN
THE DUMP
Itwasn’tlikethetwoofthemhadgottenalongoranything.Ifithadn’tbeenforthefactthat
KerwinwasK-Spot’sonlyson,hedoubtedhe’dhaveevengottentheformalemailfromthelaw-
yerannouncingDad’sdeathandinforminghimthathe,Kerwin,hadbeenleteverything.his
largestoragelockerwasallthatremainedofdearoldDad,knowntotheentertainmentworldas
Clarence“K-Spot”Loomis,mid-levelpurveyorofmostlytwo-bitactsthateverybodywithany
sensehadforgottenabouttwentyyearsago.Naturally,sinceDadhadbeenaboutasgoodwithcred
asKerwinhimselfwas,“everything”amountedtosomeclothes,afewrandombitsoffurnitureand
householdappliances,tworattyoldguitars,anonfunctionalpre-2055cyberdeck,andthekeyto
thestoragelocker.
Fromthelookofthings,theplacehadn’tbeenopenedinagoodtenyears.helockercom-
panywasmakingnoisesaboutdumpingeverythinginthestreetifthelastthreemonths’backrent
wasn’tpaid,andsinceKerwindidn’twanttopayit,herehewastograbanygoodstufthatmight
behangingaround.hehellwiththerestofit—letthemdumpit.Itwouldsavehimthetrouble,
anditwouldservehisoldcootofafatherright.
Hedidn’tquitewanttoadmitittohimself,buthehadareasonforpullingopencartonater
cartonofjunk.Itwasprobablyjustanotherib,buthisdadhadmentioneditenoughtimeswhen
Kerwinwasgrowingupthathehadtobelievethatitmightjustpossiblybetrue.hefaintchance
thatitmightbesomewhereinthelockerwaswhatkeptKerwingoinglongaterhe’dnormally
havegivenupthejobinfavorofgettinggoodanddrunk(andmaybeevenlaid,ifhewasreally
lucky).Itsureashellhadn’tbeenintheapartment—Kerwinhadmadesureofthat,goingthrough
everydrawer,everypossiblehidingplace,evenlookingunderthesmellyoldcarpetsbeforehe’d
handedthekeybacktothelandlord.No,ifDadstillhadit(andhadn’tsoldittoinanceanyofhis
sleazyhabits),itwouldbehere.Kerwinwasgoingtokeeplookinguntilheeitherfounditorwas
convincedthatitwasn’there.HehadafeelingthatifDadhadsoldit,he’dhaveheardaboutit.It
wasn’tthekindofthingyoucouldkeepquiet.
“Comeon,youoldbastard,”hemutteredtohimself.“Youbetternothavebeenlying,allthose
timesyouranyourmouthaboutthisthing.Don’tmakemesitthroughallofthiscrapfornoth-
ing!”Hesavagelythrewyetanotherboxfullofjunkintooneofthelocker’swalls,whereitburstand
scattereditscontentsallovertheloor.Hewassullenlyabouttomoveontothenextonewhenhe
spottedabulkycream-coloredenvelopeinthemidstofthespilledjunk.He’dbeensoimpatienthe
nearlymisseditgoingthroughthebox,hiddenasitwasinsideafolderwithsomeotheroldpapers.
Somethingwaswrittenontheenvelope.Hekickedhiswaythroughthetrash-dritsand
snatcheditup,peeringatitinthegrimyoverheadlightfromthesinglenakedbulb.“ToK-Spot,”it
saidinalowing,somewhatold-fashionedhand.“Enjoythesewithmygratitude.”Itwassigned,“JB.”
Kerwinheldtheenvelopeinfrontofhim,justlookingatitwithwideeyesandopenmouth
forseveralseconds.hen,hisbodyseizedwithakindofjerkingurgency,hefellbackintohischair,
rippedopentheenvelope,andallowedthecontentstodropintohislap.
Hestaredattheold-styleopticaldiskinitspaperslipcover,entrancedasthequiveringlight
madedancingrainbowsonitssilverysurface.Writtenonitinthesamehandwritingastheoutside
oftheenvelopewas:“CarrionSessions,’48,JB.Forenlightenment,seekoutabsentfriends.”
“Holyshit,”Kerwinbreathed,hardlydaringtobelievehissuddenchangeinluck.“hisisit!”
Lettinghisbreathoutslowly,heslumpedback,clutchingthepreciousdisk.Hiseyeswere
alreadybeginningtogleamwiththelightofavarice,butheknewhehadtobecareful.Hesat
abruptlyupright,realizinghewasaloneinthestoragebuildinganditwasgettinglate.Hisplane
backtoSeattlewasduetoleavetomorrowmorning ;thesoonerhewaspackedupandonit,the
better.Heslippedthediskinsidehisjacket,kickedtheboxesbackinside,andclosedandlockedthe
door.hedevilratscouldhavetherest,asfarashewasconcerned.
Hehadwhathe’dcomefor—oldDadhadcomethroughforhimindeathasheneverhadin
life.Buthe’dhavetobecareful…verycareful.Ifhedidn’thandlethisjustright,hewaslikelyto
losehisprize.
Hedidn’tevenconsiderthatitmightalsocosthimhislife.
