blame noun [count]
responsibility for an accident, problem, or bad
situation
The police don’t deserve the blame for what
happened to these children.
parade noun [count]
public celebration in which a large group of people
move through an area, often with decorated
vehicles and bands playing music
the St Patrick’s Day parade
deceive verb
to trick someone by behaving in a dishonest way
‘You two don’t deceive me,’ she said. ‘I know what
you’re trying to do’.
pocket noun [count]
a small bag that forms part of a piece of clothing
and is used for holding small objects
The money had fallen out of a hole in my pocket.
fence noun [count]
a flat upright structure made of wood or wire that
surrounds an area of land
proposal noun [count]
a plan or suggestion, especially a formal one that a
group has to consider
Proposals for a new constitution are under
discussion.
flash noun [count]
a bright light that appears for a very short time
The bomb exploded with a blinding flash.
sleeve noun [count]
the part of a piece of clothing that covers your
arms
a dress with long sleeves
fool noun [count]
someone who does not behave in an intelligent or
sensible way
You’re a fool if you think you’ll ever see that
money again.
spoil verb
to affect something in a way that makes it worse,
less attractive, or less enjoyable
I really hope it doesn’t rain – that would spoil
everything.
hook noun [count]
a curved piece of metal or plastic for hanging
things on
He hung his coat on a hook on the back of the
door.
standard noun [count/uncount]
a level of quality or achievement, especially one
that people generally consider normal or
acceptable
higher standards of service in hospitals
icing noun [uncount]
a substance used to cover or fill cakes. Icing is
made by mixing sugar with water or butter.
idiot noun [count]
someone who behaves in an extremely stupid way
You get a lot of idiots on the road at this time of
night.
substitute noun [count]
a player who replaces another member of his or her
team during a match
venue noun [count]
the place where an activity or event happens
a popular venue for wedding receptions
jar noun [count]
a glass container with a lid and a wide top,
especially one in which food is sold or kept
a jar of marmalade
lorry noun [count]
a large road vehicle used for carrying goods
mustard noun [uncount]
a yellow substance with a hot taste made from the
seeds of a plant. Mustard is eaten, especially with
meat, in small amounts.
