T he Working Dogs issue com-
mem orates an anniversar y and
marks an event, an d it also inc ludes
Great B ritain’s 2008 Europa sta mp.
In 190 8, four dogs named Jim, V ic,
Mick an d Ben began patrolling t he
docks of Hull, accord ing to info r-
mation co mpiled by K evin Gordon
for the Brit ish Transpor t Police His-
tor y Society . The new st amps com-
m emorate th e 100th ann iversar y of
th ese first Brit ish police do gs.
The stamps also honor the des-
ign ation of 200 8 as the Yea r of the
Assi stance Dog i n the United King-
dom. During the year, five ch arities
(Supp ort Dogs, He aring Dogs, Dogs
for the Disabled, C anine Part ners
and Guid e Dogs) will jointly cam -
paign for b etter ser vice s and rights
for all assist ance-dog us ers.

Ass istance dog s also are tr ained
to com plete such tasks as ope ning
and clo sing doors, tu rning on lig hts,
retrievin g slippers or keys, and he lp-
ing some one dress.
Breeds tr ained to be a ssistance dog s
include the golden retriev er, Labrador
and German shepherd. Th e stamp de-
p icts a Labrad or named Ro wan.

late 2006 to give away a 24¢ Jenny
Invert stamp .
The stamp, position No . 30 from
th e pane of 10 0 found in 1918, is
pic tured in Fig ure 1. The Scott

The firm, how ever, said t hat
th e stamp is estimated to
be worth a pproximatel y
$15 0,000 becau se it has no
gum and a straig htedge.
Sh edlock told Linn’s that
it was a “shock to w in some-
thing s o great.” He said that
he was happy for th e timing
of winni ng because h e is get-
ting ready for retirem ent.
He plan s on savin g the
stamp for a year to “h onor
the stamp.”
