Sure as Witches
“What is it?” Martigay asked her husband, swinging her legs down from the arm of
the wide chair she’d been lounging across, enjoying the warmth provided by the softly
blazing hearth.
Dye’s expression was a bit distant as he turned and gazed at the closed door across
the long open room that was the bottom floor of their home. “Better hide the good
brandy,” he said with a slow smile. “Warrik’s here.”
“Warrik!” Martigay jumped out of her chair. Rushing to the door, she pulled the
heavy slab of wood wide and threw herself through the opening just in time for Warrik
to snatch her out of the air. As Warrik swept her into a hug, Martigay tried to look over
his shoulder into the dark night behind him. “Didn’t you bring anyone with you?”
“Not this time,” the big blond told her with an apologetic smile. Unbuckling his
sword belt, he handed it off to Dye while Martigay sulked at his side, looking ready to
kick his shin.
“Am I never to meet your family?” she complained darkly, throwing her hands up
in the air. “I’m beginning to think you don’t even have a wife.”
Dye grasped Warrik’s arm as the blond warrior graced Martigay with his warm
blue gaze. “That’s ridiculous, Martigay.”
“Why?”
“Because if I weren’t happily wed,” Warrik drawled with a hearty laugh, “I’d have
stolen you away from this skinny redhead years ago.”
Martigay grinned at her frowning husband. “What do you say to that, Dye?”
Dye flexed his broad shoulders. “I’m not skinny,” he growled. “I’m just not built
like the thick end of a barrel plug.”
“You’ve missed the point,” Martigay argued as she rolled her eyes. “So it would be
all right with you if I ran off with Warrik?”
Dye’s frown deepened. “That depends. Does the deal include the children?”
“Dye!”
“Hell no,” Warrik answered swiftly. “I’ve enough problems of my own!”
Turning to his wife, Dye’s mouth curled into a smirk as he asked, “Does that sound
like a single man to you?”
At these words, Warrik glanced down at his feet, frowning at the floor as though
something were missing. “Where are the little ones?”
