Rear Light Bar

This document describes the process to put a rear light bar on a CRX. I've had a lot of comments about this mod. What it does is when ever you turn your head lights on, it will turn on too.  Its a fairly easy procedure and can be completed within an hour or so. Plus it looks cool. I'll describe the process as easy as possible, but it can be difficult.

1.) Take off the rear panel that says "CRX" across it. To disconnect it you must take the panels off from the inside and un-bolt the plastic. There are 5 bolts I believe, the most difficult one is right in the middle, there is no panel there so you must reach your arm in there.

2.) Be careful while taking the panel off. There are two bulbs plugged into the bar. Remove them by twisting the bulb seals counter-clockwise.

3.) Once you have taken the panel off you'll see a black surface with two larger plastic squares on each side that had the bulbs in the center of them. Whatever you do,

DO NOT DRILL INTO THE LARGE SQUARES! Drill holes into the center span evenly. I used 8 holes (4 on top, 4 on bottom) using a 1/4" bit. Be sure not to drill too deep. The plastic your drilling into is not that thick. Plus you don't want to go through the other side. (ouch)

4.) Now you must place the light bulbs in the 1/4" holes. Since it's hard to find 12 volt bulbs of this size (plus 12 volt bulbs run hotter) I decided to just use 6 volt bulbs and run sets of parallels. 12 volts, but broke down in columns of two 6 volt bulbs. Simply place the bulbs in there, If you want you can add bulb mounts for the bulbs. I didn't though, I simply put the bulbs in there and siliconed them in. ;)

5.) Now comes the fun part, wiring all the bulbs. Since I'm not even going to TRY to go through this I figure a picture is worth a thousand words so... (see pic below). In short, connect the two bottom leads to either side of the lights. As for connecting I would suggest soldering the connections. Whenever your done, when you turn on your lights your new light bar will turn on too. Cool...

An additional good idea is that since 8 6-volt light bulbs can still get hot and there enclosed in a small space, I would suggest drilling many (20-30) small holes such as with a 1/8 inch drill bit. This will ensure proper ventilation. Very suggested if you used silicon to seal the lights in. It probably takes a higher temperature to melt silicone but who wants to take that chance. ;) When i compleated the mod i was happy except that the 8 bulbs were seen through the plastic quite easily so i sanded the rear light bar with FINE sand paper... were not talking about SANDING people just making the light that comes through softer. just an idea.
