INTRODUCCION:

In the past, vocabulary teaching and learning were often given little priority in second language programs, but recently there has been a renewed interest in the mature of vocabulary and its role in learning and teaching. Traditionally, vocabulary learning was often left to look after itself and received only incidental attention in many textbooks and language programs.

A course curriculum was often quite specific about aspects of teaching such as grammar, reading, or speaking.

Vocabulary is a core component of language proficiency and provides much of the basis for how well learners speak, listen, read and write.

There are two important cautions that need to be considered when presenting new vocabulary.  The first relates to which words are given attention in the classroom.  The second relates to the order in which items are dealt with.

On the basis of frequency studies of vocabulary, a distinction is usually drawn between high frequency and low frequency vocabulary.
