Chapter One
“I’m surprised they didn’t strip-search us.” Romair shrugged off the sensation of
the burly guard’s hands on him as he followed his friend down the narrow hallway.
“What kind of place is this?”
“It’s different.” Jolen’s chuckle was deep, just like his voice. His broad shoulders
blocked Romair’s view of where they headed, which, knowing Jolen, was more than
likely into trouble.
“Remind me again why I passed on the Misi twins to come here?” He noticed the
unkempt walls, seawater seeping through too many cracks. And to think right now Jola
and Dal would probably have their mouths on his dick, fighting over him.
“I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.”
“As long as it’s better than the treatment we got at the door.” Romair didn’t care
much for men touching him. “Now, if they’d had women there to greet us…”
Jolen’s laugh bounced off the damp walls on either side of them. The water that
splashed at their feet smelled stale. This definitely wasn’t a place where he’d run into
any government officials. More than likely the law avoided this cave.
Jolen looked over his shoulder, that smile warning enough that they were in for
something different. He knew Jolen all too well. His friend, almost like a brother since
they’d known each other most of their lives, always swam a bit off the beaten canal.
When he’d suggested a club he knew where the kink would put the women they had
lined up for the night to shame, Romair’s curiosity piqued. Twin sisters willing to fuck
him in spite of his reputation would be hard to top.
They splashed through the murky water that came up to their ankles. Any decent
establishment would keep the water level lower. The hallway had a slight decline. They
were heading deeper into the mountain. Just to get here, they’d left their tran-bus in the
locking bay in Australia Sea, and then swam deep into the dark waters to this forgotten-
looking place. Not an establishment people like them would normally frequent.
People like them. Romair shook his head, his grin matching the one on Jolen’s face.
Who would have thought he’d ever consider himself someone of rank? But it was true.
For both of them. The end of the Civil War had found him and his buddy sitting rather
pretty with new titles, new statuses in life.
Having fought side by side in the bloodiest battle he hoped to ever witness in his
life, they’d helped Shara Dar become leader and she’d rewarded them nicely. She was
young, still learning, spontaneous in her actions at times, but bright. Romair would kill
for Shara, and she knew it. She knew she’d do well with Jolen and him by her side. Both

holding rank of First Commanders, he’d been surprised the men at the entrance to the
mountain hadn’t recognized them.
Those who swam this type of life didn’t care about government. Just outside the
boundaries for the newly formed city of Zeal Current, they had their own laws down
here. It hadn’t been so many years that Jolen and Romair moved among folks who lived
from day to day. And he’d do well to remember that.
Their economy was good. Jobs were everywhere and the South Passage prospered.
Many preferred living on the edge, cutting deals, working for themselves. As long as
they didn’t cross over the line to being criminal, many did well living like this. He’d
done it himself for years.
“Where are we going? To the core of Undrworld?” Romair watched the artificial
beam of light that ran overhead flicker while they descended farther down the narrow
hallway.
“We’re almost there.” Jolen didn’t elaborate.
Just like Jolen—keep him in the dark and then throw him into a situation where
more than likely he’d be kicking ass to save his friend before the night ended.
The hallway came to an abrupt end and a black round pool of still water
shimmered against the artificial light. Jolen jumped in without a word, disappearing
from Romair’s sight instantly. Water rippled around his ankles and he sighed,
admitting a bit of adventure appealed to him after the week they’d had. Jumping in
after Jolen, it took a minute for his eyes to adjust to the darkness of the water—and the
warmth of it. They were a hell of a lot deeper under the city than he’d originally
thought. Most places this deep underground bordered on the criminal, law enforcement
seldom being called to these areas and patrolling only as needed. Leave it to Jolen to
bring them somewhere disreputable enough that they’d have to deal with the wrath of
Shara later.
Although thinking of how her hot little body got all tense when she lost her temper
made the water around him feel even warmer than it was. Shoving those thoughts out
of his head—Shara ruled the South Passage now—he wouldn’t lust after her anymore.
Breathing the warm water through the gills behind his ears almost made him
claustrophobic. There was no light, which made it hard to know how wide the canal
was they swam through. Jolen moved ahead of him, creating an underwater current as
his thick legs kicked through the water. When he turned and looked at Romair, his
black eyes glowed while his bald head and the stupid grin on his face made him look
like the ne’er-do-well idiot that he’d often had the reputation of being.
They climbed out of the water alongside each other and lifted themselves onto cool
stone.
“Shit.” It was the first word out of his mouth.
Romair stared at the room of people in front of him.
Jolen nudged him in the arm, gesturing with his head for Romair to follow. They
moved through the crowded establishment, the smell of alcohol, smoke and sex
