Exercise 1 ]              Read about conditionals

Pierwszy tryb warunkowy

mówi o przyszłych sprawach, które się wydarzą gdy zostanie spełniony warunek:

If

When

Unless (if not)

As soon as

The moment

+  Present Simple

Will + czasownik

Will not + czasownik

Can/May/Must + czasownik

Cannot/May not + czasownik

rozkaz

Np.

I am /I’m not

they are/they aren’t

he doesn’t think

we have

I work/I don’t work

she is

we are

He isn’t

They  like

They don’t know

When you come I will be happy.

If you don’t come I will not be happy.

When you ask I can go with you

Drugi tryb warunkowy

mówi o teraźniejszych sprawach, które się nie wydarzą bo nie można spełnić warunku (jest to niemożliwe, nielogiczne, hipotetyczne):

If

When

Unless (if not)

As soon as

The moment

+  PAST Simple

Would + czasownik

Would not + czasownik

Could/Might + czasownik

Could not/ Might not+ czasownik

Np.

I were/ I weren’t

they were / They weren’t

he didn’t think

they saw/ they didn’t see

I worked/I didn’t work

she were

we were

He weren’t

They  liked

They didn’t know

If she came I would be happy. (She is not going to come however strong I wish because she is having classes now!)

If she weren’t so wise I wouldn’t talk to her (but she IS wise , it cannot be changed...)

Trzeci tryb warunkowy

mówi o przeszłych sprawach, które się już wydarzyły i można tego odwrócić!  Mogę jedynie ŻAŁOWAĆ i gdybać co było gdyby to się nie zdarzyło (co już się zdarzyło i się nie odstanie!~!!)

If

When

Unless (if not)

As soon as

The moment

+  PAST PERFECT

Would have + czasownik ED

Would not have + czasownik ED

Could/Might  have+ czasownik ED

Could not/ Might not have+ czasownik ED

Np.

I had been/ I hadn’t been

you had done

they had stopped

They hadn’t waited

she had killed

we had written

He hadn’t read

If she hadn’t come I wouldn’t have known her.

If they had brought umbrellas they wouldn’t have been wet (Gdyby przynieśli na 100 % nie byliby mokrzy!)

If she had used the safety screen hey eyes could have been better. (być może - nie na pewno!)

Zero: present + present                 If you press this button, the engine stops. (always true)

First: Present +will                              If she rings this evening, I’ ll let you know.

Second: Past + would                What would you do if you became President?

Third: Past perfect +would have  If I hadn’t saved her that night, she’d have drowned.

Condition is formed in the if clause followed by a comma in the result clause.

You can also put the result clause first without using a comma between the clauses. see above

If they had more money, they would build a new house.

They would build a new house if they had more money.

Mixed conditionals:

Type 1/3                If he is honest he wouldn’t have taken the money from my purse.

Type 2/3                If I knew him better I would have invited him.

Type 3/2                If he had finished earlier he wouldn’t be working now!

In polite requests only!!

will/ should can be used instead of present  should  ... would

(usual in business letters)

I should be grateful if you would send me your estimate date as soon as possible.

I should appreciate if you would put the matter in hand as your earliest convenience

I will carry the tea things if you will bring the teapot.(usual in polite requests)

Should and were to are used in conditional sentences in all persons to suggest improbability.
