Common features
For over 20 years, "Unpack, plug-in
and go" has been a well-proven con-
cept for SIMATIC programming
devices on the market for automa-
tion technology. The success of the
SIMATIC PGs lies on the one hand
that the devices with integrated
interfaces and programming soft-
ware are fully equipped for pro-
gramming the SIMATIC compo-
nents. On the other hand, the
SIMATIC PGs with a Windows operat-
ing system and their high-perfor-
mance PC hardware provide a plat-
form for various applications beyond
the boundaries of SIMATIC.
Ongoing innovation of the program-
ming devices in the direction of
modern PC technology always safe-
guards continuity, i.e. older SIMATIC
target systems will still be support-
ed. The latest generation of SIMATIC
programming devices comprises the
Field PG in Notebook form and the
Power PG as a programming work-
station.
Common features
Industrial compatibility
The two new SIMATIC programming
devices are designed for harsh eve-
ryday industrial use. The shock resis-
tant and torsionally rigid die-cast
magnesium housing makes a signif-
icant contribution to this.
Large-area shock absorbers provide
combined corner and edge protec-
tion and prevent, at the same time,
thanks to their damping characteris-
tics the potentially damaging effects
of vibrations and shocks on the elec-
tronic components. A fold-away, er-
gonomically shaped handle ensures
easy and secure transport.
The sum total of all these construc-
tional measures increases the avail-
ability of the device, resulting in a
cost saving (reduction in the total
cost of ownership).
Integrated interfaces
Interfaces required for program-
ming the SIMATIC controllers over
TTY, MPI, PROFIBUS or Industrial Eth-
ernet have been integrated. The Eth-
ernet interface can also be used to
connect to corporate networks
(LANs).
The interfaces for the memory cards
of SIMATIC S7 and S5 as well as for
the new micro memory cards are
also integrated. S5 EPROM modules
can be programmed using an adapt-
er for the memory card interface.
Two PC card interfaces and two USB
interfaces are available for connect-
ing modern peripheral devices such
as modems, scanners and cameras
but also for a printer, keyboard or
mouse or an external monitor. To
protect against damage and fouling,
all interfaces can be protected with
slides or flaps.
Ergonomics
Comfortable and amenable to work-
ing over long periods without caus-
ing tiredness is assisted by:
· The ergonomic keyboard with
rugged pushbutton mechanisms
and laser inscription that cannot
be rubbed off
· The touchpad insensitive to dirt
with a high degree of positioning
accuracy as well as
· Supports at the side for the ball of
the thumb.

Archiving of large
quantities of data
With the configurator option
"SIMATIC PC/PG Image & Partition
Creator" and the combination drive
(DVD-ROM/CD-RW) or the DVD burn-
er (DVD-R/-RW), fast, easy and con-
venient data archiving – even of the
complete hard disk – is possible.
Erasable CDs or DVDs can also be
used.

Battery-powered Field PG
The new mobile, industry-compati-
ble SIMATIC® Field PG in Notebook
form is designed for use principally
during commissioning, service and
maintenance of automation sys-
tems.
In addition, it can of course be used
for setting parameters and program-
ming. Thanks to its compact dimen-
sions and low weight of less than 4
kg, it is ideally suited to use in con-
fined spaces at the machine, in air-
craft or on-board trains.
Despite its compactness, the Field
PG is ergonomic with its 14.1" TFT
display with a resolution of 1024 x
768 pixels. For a supplementary
price, a high-resolution display vari-
ant with 1400 x 1050 pixels
(SXGA+) can also be ordered.
A high-performance Li ion battery
supports operation for several hours
without connection to the supply
system which provides a high de-
gree of mobility.
The rechargeable battery and the
main memory can be easily reached
behind separate covers in the floor
of the housing and can be easily
replaced or upgraded.
A so-called interface box is also
available that operates as an inter-
face multiplier and that can be con-
nected to the Field PG equipped with
a Pentium 4.
It enables automation components
to be connected over three inter-
faces:
· S5 online (TTY)
· Serial (V.24)
· Parallel (LPT)
The interface box is necessary for
programming SIMATIC S5 and non-
Siemens systems but not for
SIMATIC S7.

The SIMATIC Power PG® is a flexible
programming workstation with Pen-
tium 4 technology as well as high-
speed DDR-RAM modules.
In addition to the PC card slots, in
the Power PG, the PCI slots can also
be used for two PCI modules for flex-
ible expansion possibilities.
The Power PG is used principally for
parameter setting and program-
ming as well as for simulation and
testing. An integrated wide-range-
input power supply supports world-
wide use.
The power supply for the keyboard
can be provided by a normal or re-
chargeable battery, but if necessary
it can be maintained from the Power
PG over a special cable.
The Power PG impresses users, in
particular, with its high-perfor-
mance 15" display that can be rotat-
ed by 45° with a resolution of up to
1024 x 768 pixels which offers max-
imum 2D/3D graphics performance.
For an additional price, a display
variant with 1400 x 1050 pixels
(SXGA+) can be supplied.
The full PC keyboard with numeric
pad does not have a cable and can
therefore be placed anywhere on
the desk and positioned at an angle
of up to 15° using fold-out feet.
The Power PG can be upgraded
quickly and easily in the future.
After removing the rear panel, ex-
pansion modules can be inserted
and the processor, RAM and hard
disk can be easily replaced.
