Canon Digital Camera Firmware Update Instructions
For PowerShot S400, DIGITAL IXUS 400, PowerShot G5/ S50/ A70/ A60/ A300
[IMPORTANT] Precautionary Information for Performing Firmware Updates
• Be sure the camera battery is fully charged before performing a firmware update.
• Never turn off the camera for any reason while the camera is rewriting the firmware. Turning off power
during rewriting may cause the camera to be inoperable.
• Do not open the card slot cover or operate buttons or other controls while the camera is
rewriting the firmware.
• Once the firmware update has been completed it is not possible to repeat the update or
return to the previous version.
Step 3. Rewrite the firmware.
Perform the following operations on the camera to rewrite the firmware.
(1) Turn on the camera in Playback mode.
(2) Press the MENU button to display the Playback menu in the LCD monitor.
(3) Press the Up/Down buttons to select [Firm Update...]
If [Firm Update...] does not appear or cannot be selected, go back to Step 2 and
(4) Press the SET button to display the confirmation screen.
The message "Update firmware version? x.x.x.x -> 2.0.0.0" will appear in the LCD monitor.
"x.x.x.x" indicates the current version.
(5) Press the Left/Right buttons to select OK.
(6) Press the SET button and the camera will start rewriting the firmware.
Once rewriting begins, the message "Updating now!!! Do not turn the power
off!" will appear in the LCD monitor, and the indicators will flash on and off.
After this continues for several minutes, the camera power will switch off automatically.
At this point, the rewriting firmware is completed.
If the message "Updated Error!" appears in the LCD monitor, go back to Step 2 and

Step 1. Unpack the firmware update files.
Use the mouse to double-click the Firmware Update Data (compressed) file that you
downloaded from the home page.
After unpacking, the files necessary for the firmware update will be contained in a folder
with the name “ xxxxx_f ”. (xxxxx is camera model name)
The downloaded files should be unpacked on the same computer used for the firmware update.
If the files are already unpacked it is not necessary to repeat this step.
Step 2. Create the memory card to use for the firmware update.
Open the unpacked folder and start the UploadFirmware software used to transfer data.
Follow the procedures shown in the Upload Firmware window. (Note the precautionary
information below.)
The procedures will include steps such as:
Load the memory card (CF card included with the camera) and initialize the card.
Connect the camera to the computer using the USB cable (provided with the camera).
When the UploadFirmware procedures are completed, the memory card for rewriting the
firmware has been created.
Close the UploadFirmware window, turn off the camera, and disconnect the USB cable from the
computer and the camera. *Do not remove the battery or the memory card from the camera.
During firmware rewriting, if the alarm tone sounds continuously or if the indicators
remain on and the rewriting process does not end within 5 minutes, remove the battery
from the camera and contact our service center.
Step 4. Verify the firmware version and complete the update.
Start the ZoomBrowser EX (Windows)* or ImageBrowser (Mac OS)* software.
Turn on the camera in Playback mode and connect the camera to the computer with
the USB cable (included with the camera).
Perform the following steps to verify the firmware version.
ZoomBrowser EX: In the Camera window, select [Camera Setup].
ImageBrowser: On the Canon Camera menu, select [Setup] - [Camera Setup].
Verify that the firmware version is "2.0.0.0."
*This software can be installed on the computer from the Digital Camera Solution Disk.

Windows 98/2000/Me Users:
If the UploadFirmware program does not start normally, install the driver (included on
the Digital Camera Solution Disk) and then start UploadFirmware.
Mac OS9 Users:
It is first necessary to install ImageBrowser (included on the Digital Camera Solution Disk).
There may be the case it is necessary to restart the Macintosh the first time that UploadFirmware
is run. Be sure to save any other files that have not been saved. After restarting the Macintosh,
open UploadFirmware again and continue the update operation from that point.
After verifying the version number, initialize the memory card that was used to
rewrite the firmware, and delete the files used for the firmware update from the
computer. The firmware update is now complete.
