Travelling around Britain by public transport is generally very safe, but there are precautions you can follow
to reduce risk and make you feel more confident.
Plan your route before you travel. This will reduce the chance of your getting lost in an unfamiliar area.
And make sure someone else knows your day's sightseeing schedule.
Do not keep your credit cards in the wallet and carry some extra cash in case you lose your cards.
When waiting to pay, keep your money out of sight and then discreetly put any change in your pocket.
Ensure your keys are kept separate from items which carry your address.
If you are travelling at night or in an unfamiliar area, try and get someone to meet you at your destination.

John was asleep. At 4 o'clock in the morning he heard his horses making a great noise, so he got up, took
his rifle and went to the door. He thought that some forest animal had scared the horses but when he got
outdoors he saw fire among the trees at the back of his house. There was a smell of burning wood and
a noise of great trees crashing to the ground.
He ran back to the house, told his wife to dress herself and their son as quickly as she could, and wait at
the door for him. He took the little money they had put aside, quickly put it in the bag, and then ran out to
catch the two best horses. Meanwhile, the fire was coming closer and closer. He thought that it would reach
the house before they would be ready to leave. Just in time he put his wife and child on one horse, jumped
on the other, and they set off.
When they rode off, he looked back and saw that the fire had reached their house. Hoping to save their
lives, they set out for a lake several miles away. His plan was to find shelter on the far side of the lake.
Although it was difficult for the horses to move quickly through the forest due to the fire they soon brought
the family to the lake.
When they reached the lake, they got off the horses and let them go. They never saw them again.
The line of fire and smoke began to come upon them from both sides of the lake. They walked into the
water as far as they could, and lay down with their heads just above the surface. Their little son, whose face
had become red and hot on the ride, stopped crying for a while as he lay in the cool water.
Then the fire came! The sky above them was red with burning wood and the smoke hid the sun. John was
afraid that one of them might be hurt by the falling trees, but fortunately nothing like that happened. Although
their bodies were cool, their heads not covered by the water became very hot and breathing became much
harder. Many forest animals ran into the water and stood still nearby, afraid of them, but even more of the
flames around. All of them stayed in the water for the rest of that day and through the night.
As the morning came the fire died out, but the smell of the smoke was still in the air. When the ground
became cool enough for them to stand they got out of the water. The animals followed them. John and his
family started walking and after a few hours they got to a part of the forest which had not been burned
