Introduction
Poland joined the European Union on 1 May 2004
and quickly established itself as one of the most
dynamic and economically important new EU
member countries.
While Polish spelling may often make some words
look “strange”, there are actually many familiar
words. Thus, “deweloper”, “depozyt”, “meneder”
and “lokaut” come directly from English. Many
Polish legal words come from French, such as
“konosament” (bill of lading), “aport” (payment
in kind), “szanta” (blackmail) and “licytacja”
(auction) and there are quite a few which come
from German, such as “weksel” (bill of exchange),
“makler” (broker) and “handel” (trade). Some
Polish expressions mix terms from more than
one language, such as “transakcja handlowa”
(commercial transaction = French + German),
“handel elektroniczny” (e-commerce = German
+ Greek), “podpis elektroniczny” (electronic
signature = Polish + Greek), “oskaryciel
publiczny” (public prosecutor = Polish + Latin)
and “bariery taryfowe” (tariff barriers = Arabic
+ Latin, via Italian).
In recent years a big increase in trade has resulted
in expanding international contacts. Many firms
have decided to invest in Poland and Polish
companies are entering many foreign markets.
The commercial connections among European
countries are being reinforced by numerous
immigrants who take advantage of the freedom
to work outside of their homeland. No doubt
there is a growing need for effective and accurate
business communication between representatives
of various nations.
Polish is a principal official language of the European
Union, spoken by tens of millions of people, and
thus we thought that it was ”high time” to add a
Polish legal dictionary to Eversheds popular multi-
lingual publications, covering some key legal terms
in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
We trust that this publication will be a useful tool
for those who communicate regarding legal matters
with other jurisdictions in Europe and worldwide.
We hope that you find this Dictionary to be
very useful (uyteczny), creative (kreatywny)
and logical (logiczny) and we of course welcome
your suggestions (sugestie) for additions
and improvements.
