The Coaching Ghost Inventory
Enough thoughts about concepts, it’s time for you to test yourself ! ! ! Do you want to learn more
about your own coaching practices and approach? Are you more of a directive, involved,
guiding or participative coach…? Where could you improve ?
As Coaching gathers momentum as an approach in supporting Youth Initiatives, We felt it was
important to develop a tool that would help youth workers in identifying their coaching style and
approach. The 'Coaching Ghost Inventory' was developed based on many of the educational
tools and models already in existence. This inventory will hopefully help you to explore your
'coaching style' and to identify possible learning and development areas for improvement as
well as to better understand the role of a coach.

Coaching Ghost Inventory
BI-CYCLE TOOL 1
Use this tool as a self-relective assessment model to guide you in supporting and challenging your
development as a coach. It will help you to explore which coaching style its you better, as well as
to understand the diferent roles that a coach can play when supporting youth projects.

Coaching Inventory Statements
. The responsibility for learning and development
always lie with the coach.
. As a coach I like to share my skills and knowl-
edge by being involved.
. Coaching is about showing people the way.
. People learn best when they take responsibility
and get involved.
. People need coaches to facilitate learning and
for directing them to success.
. Learning by doing with others is essential for the
coach and the learners.
. Coaches are essential if expertise and knowl-
edge are to be transferred.
. It is important for everyone to be involved
through the whole process.
. A coach is there to ensure people stay focussed
and on track.
. A coach’s participation is an important part of
any team.
. The responsibility for learning is that of the par-
ticipants, the coach is there just to support.
. The coach has to ensure everyone has the op-
portunity to fully get involved.
. Coaching is another friendlier term for a man-
ager.
. As a coach I ind it diicult not to get involved.
. If people are the vehicles and drivers, the coach
is the map.
. A coach has to be able to creatively engage all
participants.
. The coach reminds the participants of the
agreed aims and objectives.
. The coach can motivate and ensure the group
achieves more through seeing themselves as
part of the group.
. The coach is there to hold the hands of the
participants.
. When a group is functioning efectively the
coach isn’t needed.
. A coach will have more experience and knowl-
edge than the participants.
. Being totally part of the group allows the coach
to fully understand the group dynamics and
learning process.
. A coach will encourage and motivate the group
to identify forward strategies.
. A coach should allow the group to review and
evaluate their own activities.
. A coach should not allow the group to deviate
from its goals.
. The coach’s input of ideas is as important as the
participants’.
. A coach is there to manage the groups dynamic
not the group activities.
. The coach will ensure everyone in the group has
equal opportunity to give their views.
. A coach will make sure meetings move on a
good pace.
. A group cannot meet if the coach isn’t there.
. A coach can make suggestions about the proc-
ess but the group will make the decisions about
the direction and activity.
. The process is more important than the prod-
uct.

Plotting Your Results
To obtain a more graphic illustration of your Coaching Ghost results, transfer your column totals
from the scoring form to the table below. Maybe use diferent colours and ill the columns to create
a graph like illustration.

Coaching Ghost Interpretation
The Coaching Ghost Inventory is a self relective assessment model to be used as a guide for sup-
porting and challenging your development as a Coach.
The maximum score on this Coaching Ghost Inventory is  points. Any score above  will usu-
ally mean that you use a balanced combination of coaching method styles and have a broad and
advanced understanding of coaching methods and techniques. You are aware of the importance
of coaching and that diferent learners and groups can have diferent learning needs and ap-
proaches.
If your score is in the range of  – , this could mean you have a good understanding of coaching
methods and techniques and you may be slightly experienced but not a regular coaching practi-
tioner. In time with some self relection, training and further experiences of coaching you are well
on your way to improving your practice and understanding of coaching.
If your score is below  this could mean that you are a coaching novice. Your understanding of the
term and your experience of coaching might be relatively new. Completing the Coaching Ghost
Inventory could be your irst positive step to becoming a coach and understanding its roles.
The column with the highest score can mean it is this approach you feel most comfortable and
familiar with. However it is important to look closer at those areas where you reach a low score to
identify possible learning and development areas for you as a coach.
Remember a good coach will always use a variety of techniques and methods depending on needs.
A well balanced coach will have column scores that are close and similar.
