Frontispiece: An 18th century engraving by I. A. Covinus depicts the Biblical
description of the creation of insects. The image appears in Physique sacrée, ou
histoire naturelle de la Bible, a massive eight-volume study by the prominent
Swiss naturalist Johann Jacob Scheuchzer (1672–1737). The artist Covinus
here combines an accurate rendering of various insect forms with an allegorical
treatment of the Book of Genesis; this approach reflects the author
Scheuchzer’s lifelong efforts to provide scientific evidence for the literal truth
