Prologue
Faldron Mountains
Trotting behind his alpha and two other guards, Dirk was ever watchful as they
neared the prearranged meeting place. Gionne, the alpha of the Valde wolf pack had
agreed to meet with Rian, the alpha of a newly formed coyote pack, in a clearing just
ahead. From what they knew, the coyote pack was small, an offshoot of the larger Aden
Pack from the other side of the mountain. They were no match for the Valde pack but
Dirk couldn’t shake an unsettled feeling as they neared the meeting place. The coyotes
had settled on the northeast ridge of the mountain. The land was just off the Valde
homelands and they needed to ensure that the coyotes would respect the boundary.
Forest fires and droughts had taken their toll on the once-abundant wildlife. There was
still plenty for all as long as everyone took only what was needed.
Gionne stopped on the boundary of their land. Still hidden in heavy underbrush the
small group formed a semicircle, peering out into the clearing. The open area was quiet,
nothing moved but Dirk sensed the presence of the coyotes. The alpha emitted a low
rumble from his chest signaling the pack members to change to human form.
Dropping his satchel to the ground, Dirk began the transformation and his coat of
pure white turned to golden flesh. Shaking out a pair of jeans and a shirt, he couldn’t
mistake the feel of hungry eyes upon him. The coyotes were known for trickery and
possible deviousness, so Dirk didn’t trust them. He hoped they were not walking into a
trap. However, Dirk trusted his alpha’s judgment and knew reinforcements weren’t far
behind. Gionne didn’t believe in taking chances. The Valde and the old Aden pack had
bad blood between them from long ago. Dirk didn’t know the whole story but he knew
enough to be suspicious. Gionne believed in letting bygones be bygones and Dirk
would follow his lead. This newly formed pack, made up of young coyotes who hadn’t
been around during the bad times, probably didn’t know any more about it than he did.
