This pretty little tatted angel is
designed after a piece of machine lace
that someone showed me in 2007 when
I was on the road teaching tatting.
The head and wings are about the same
as the original, but the skirt is a Celtic
knot because the Celtic weaving on the
machine made piece was not easily
replicated in tatting.
We can never have too many angels!
Begin with one shuttle and ball of
thread CTM. The head is a reverse ring
with rings thrown off, although it may
be done with a SCMR if you are more
comfortable with that technique.
Head

The *Rings are all the same. To close the center ring you pull the core, i.e. ball thread, not the shuttle thread
end!

Lave about 1/8” thread space then tat a lock stitch. One half of the stitch flipped, and then the same
half not flipped. This counts as the first stitch of the next chain.
Bchain ( 30 – 30 – 30 – 30 – 30 – 30 ) The BDS will hold the straighter shape. Normal DS want to curve
around in a circle in 30 stitches. Shape this chain about every 10 stitches so it has the shape of the final
Celtic knot with the picots at the bends in the chain so you can join to them later. It is a good idea to tat
a stitch gauge with 1 inch of normal ds, and 1 inch of BDS to compare and see if your tension needs to
be tighter, or if you need to adjust the number of stitches for the BDS because they take up more space.
To weave this knot you will need to unwind your shuttle and pull a couple of yards of thread to cut from
the ball. The amount of thread you will need to finish tatting the angel depends upon the size of thread
you use. My sample is DMC Pearle cotton size 8. I needed a couple of yards for both thread ends.
Begin at A and follow the arrows.

After weaving the knot wind the thread ends on two
shuttles, and then join into the thread space
between the head and the Celtic knot.
Wing1
Choose the shuttle as S1 whose thread is closer to
the Knot and use the shuttle as S2 whose thread is
closer to the head to use as the ball thread.
S1
Chain (4 + 6) Join to the picot of the thrown off ring around the head – see photo diagram. Turn
Ring (6 – 4 – 6) turn

Chain (10 – 10) Next tie the two threads on the opposite side of the thread space between the head
and the Celtic knot, or do an alligator join over the thread space.
Skirt
Chain (8 + 2 + 15) The first join is to the wing, and the second join is to the Celtic knot. Turn
Ring (3 + 3 – 3 – 3) turn
Chain ( 4 + 2 – 2 + 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 + 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 ) turn
Ring (3 + 3 – 3 – 3) turn
Chain (2 – 2 + 4 + 15 2 + 8) tie the ends together in the thread space between the head and the Celtic
knot.
Follow the photo diagram, but notice that I made too many picots on one side of the bottom of the skirt.
It’s NOT a mistake, just a pattern variation… well, ok, it is a mistake too.
Hide the ends and cut them close to the work, or use them to make a loop to hang this angel on the
wall, or from a lamp, or window shade, or anywhere you need an angel.

After tatting the first wing, join into
the thread space between the head
and the Celtic knot. Next, tat around
the skirt, then join into the thread
space between the head and Celtic
knot, and then tat the second wing
the same as the first wing.
