Scalenus Posterior
Origin
Posterior tubercles of the transverse
processes of the 4th through 7th cervical
vertebrae
Insertion
Crosses the fist rib posterior to the
scalenus medius and deep to the levator
scapulae muscle to attach to the lateral
surface of the second, and sometimes the
third, rib
Actions
With insertion fixed:
Lateral cervical flexion to the same side;
rotates cervical spine to opposite side
Support and elevate the upper rib cage
when carrying, lifting, or pulling heavy
objects
With origin fixed:
important auxiliary muscles of inspiration
(more commonly used than are the
sternocleidomastoid muscles)
Nerve
Anterior (motor) branches of the C2-C7
spinal nerves
