Netherlands.VERONistheDutchIARUsociety.ItisuntruethattheDutchadministrationisthinkingaboutD­
Starrepeatersoperatinginthe437­438MHzband.Presently,theamateurserviceintheNetherlandsand
neighbouringcountriessuffersfromharmfulinterference,causedbywhatcanbeseenasaregrettable
implementationoftheRadiolocationserviceinthe438­440MHzband.Forthatreason,usageofD­Star
repeaterswithoutputfrequenciesintheupper2MHzpartoftheRegion170cmband,ishampered.
Tosolvethisproblem,recentlytheDutchD­Starcommunitycameupwithaproposaltoplantheoutput
frequenciesofD­Starrepeatersjustbelow438MHzandhasaskedVERONtosupportthisproposal.VERON
hasdecidednottodoso,duetoincompatibilitybetweentheamateurserviceandamateur­satelliteservice.
Moreover,theproposaldeviatessignificantlyfromtheIARU­R1bandplan.InthemeantimeVERONhas
madeanalternativepropositiontoamendtheDutchnationalfrequencyplaninsuchaway,thatitfully
complieswitharticle5RR,theEuropeanCommonAllocationtable,aswellastheIARU­R1bandplan.

TheNovember,1934,issueofR/9magazineannouncedanewoperatingawardforradioamateurs,
designedtoencouragethegrowingpopularityofcontactingstationsacrosstheglobe,whatweknowtoday
asDXing.TheawardwascalledWorkedAllZonesandwastobegrantedformakingconfirmedcontactswith
hamsineachofthe40zonesintowhichtheworldhadbeendividedbyR/9'seditors.Today,75yearslater,
R/9hasbeensucceededbyCQmagazineandWAZ­WorkedAllZones­sponsoredbyCQsince1945,
continuestobeoneofamateurradio'smostprestigiousoperatingawards.IncelebrationoftheWAZ's75th
anniversary,CQmagazineisannouncingalimited­term"DiamondJubileeWAZ"award.Aspecialcertificate
willbeissuedtoamateurswhomakecontactsinall40CQZonesoftheWorldbetweenNovember1,2009
andDecember31,2010.Certificateswillbenumberedbuttherewillbenoendorsements.Confirmationswill
notberequired.However,itisexpectedthatapplicantswillcontinuetoupholdamateurradio'slong­standing
traditionofhonestyandself­regulation.StandardWAZapplicationfeeswill
apply.CompletedetailsontheDiamondJubileeWAZAwardwillbeinthe
October2009issueofCQ,andarepostedontheCQwebsite,www.cq­
amateur­radio.com,withalinkfromtheOctoberissuehighlightspage.WAZis
thesecond­oldestamateurradiooperatingawardstillofferedtoday.Theonly
currentawardthatisolderistheInternationalAmateurRadioUnion'sWorked
AllContinentsaward.TheARRL'sDXCenturyClub(DXCC)awardwas
introducedin1936.Todate,morethan8,600basicWAZawardshavebeen
issued.

ARRL­CWcontest…That’swhenIgotreallyexcited.ThenI
wasinvitedtogotovisitmyfriendsinParaguay…couldI
somehowdoboth?Afteralotofscheduling,Iwasableto
fititin.Paraguaywaswonderful,beautifulandquite
moderncountrywithgoodinfrastructure,andIoperated
fromthesuperstationofZP5AZL/ZP0R.
ThenIwenttoHaiti. Ihadpreparedforeverything,
becauseIhaveoftengoneondxpeditionstoremotespots
ontheglobe.Butfirstofall,Iwastravelingwithawork
group.Ourworkprojectwastoreplacethebaseplateand
insulatorofa240footbroadcasttower.Withonlyhandtools
andnoelectricity,wejackeduptheoldrustytower.This
wastrulycrazyandthiswouldneverbeattemptedbytower
engineers.Fortunatelywewerenotengineersandwere
desperateenoughtotrysuchanimpossibletask.(Youcan
