Relect and Plan
As we turn the page on 2018, and head into 2019, we take the time to reflect on the ups and
downs of the previous year, while looking to what lies ahead of us.
Whether the past year was
one of your best, or it proved to be more challenging than you thought, there’s a lot to be thankful for
and another chance for improvement this year.
In our annual State of the Industry report, starting on page 12, we turn to eight industry experts
to weigh in on what they expect to see for the year ahead. Here’s a glimpse of what you can expect:
• Alex Carrick, chief economist at Cincinnati-based ConstructConnect, addresses the economic
future of the industry.
• Jason F. McLennan, CEO, McLennan Design, Bainbridge Island, Wash., and founder of the Liv-
ing Building Challenge, talks about the future of the sustainability movement.
• Constructive Insights columnist Alan Scott, FAIA, senior associate at WSP, Portland, Ore.,
looks into the trends around the health and wellness movement, and the impact of resilience
on the building industry.
• Renee Ramey, executive director of the Metal Rooing Alliance, speaks to the increased accep-
tance of metal rooing among homeowners and how acceptance is also being driven by severe
weather events.
• David Beard is president of the Iron Workers District Council of St. Louis. He digs into one of
the thorniest issues surrounding the metal construction industry—the shortage of skilled labor.
• The Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association president Keith Wentworth follows
suit and identiies ways the industry needs to attract young workers.
• Tony Bouquot, general manager of the Metal Building Manufacturers Association, reports that
manufacturer members are generally optimistic going into 2019. He also takes a look at the
upcoming issues around codes and standards.
• Karl Hielscher, executive director of the Metal Construction Association, rounds up the industry
overview by touching base on the labor shortage, ire-related codes and standards, while also
offering an optimistic future.
Take a few minutes and dig into each of the sections in our report. Each has a ton of great infor-
mation and provides a preview of what we can expect in the coming year in regards to the overall
construction industry, the skilled labor shortage, codes and standards, the resiliency of buildings, the
future of sustainability and more.
Take this time as we head into a new year to make some new goals for you and your business.
