These designs are all based on simple
curves forming symmetrical patterns
which are then coloured in different
ways. It is possible to make a variety of
different patterns, so have a mess about
and see what happens. I have used a
heavy line over the top of the painting
to give the impression of lead beading.
Materials Required:
Transparent P.V.C or acetate
12cm x 12cm: PEN01.
Paintbrushes.
Old newspapers and masking tape.
Craft knife and ruler.
Outliner: Black, Gold and Silver.
Liquid crystal paints: 01 Lemon Yellow,
02 Golden Yellow, 04 Scarlet, 09 Parma
Violet, 11 Deep Blue, 14 Bright Blue,
18 Oriental Green and 20 Bronze Green.
Gel crystal paints: 027 Crystal, 044
Iridescent, 045 Gold and 046 Silver.
Liquid crystal gloss Anti-UV varnish.
White paper insert: PN08P.
Double sided tape.
Card mount: AP52U or
AP53U, Black.
To Make The Card:
Always work in as dust free an
area as you can and protect your
furniture with old newspapers.
Before beginning to outline the
design, it is a good idea to practice
on a spare piece of acetate. Keep this
to use later as you may also need to
practice working the gold outliner
over the top of the black before
trying the real thing. Hold the tube
in your hands for a minute or two to
warm it up, then practice squeezing
the paste out using gentle, even
pressure to ensure a smooth flow.

Place the acetate onto the diagram and hold
in place with a little masking tape. Following the
thick black lines, squeeze the black outliner onto
the acetate. At this stage the outliner should be
a normal thickness line, the heavier effect comes
when the lines are overpainted at the end. Check
carefully to ensure there are no gaps in the lines,
if you find any gaps, go over them with a little
more outliner then leave aside to dry.

Paint the design in just the liquid crystal
colours shown above and allow the paint to dry
overnight. Paint anti UV varnish over the paint
to help protect the colours from fading in the
light, then leave to dry again.
Use gold outliner to go over the black lines
worked previously and allow to dry. Overpaint
the lemon and golden yellow with the crystal
gel colours shown on the key and, once again,
leave to dry.
The design can be mounted into a
card with white paper behind, but
cutting a second aperture in the back
flap allowing the light to shine right
through will really bring your work
to life.
To do this, lay the card face down,
fold over the left hand flap and turn
the card the right way up again.
Lightly mark the shape of the aperture
onto the back flap. Open the card and
carefully cut along the marked line
with a sharp knife.

Mount the design into the card in
the usual way using double sided tape.
When using a dark card mount always
use a white insert to reflect the light
onto the design.
The following designs are worked
using the same method. Use the colour
keys given with each design.

Where there is a wavy line sepa-
rating two colours, don’t use outliner
between them. Paint each half with
the colour shown then using the very
tip of the paintbrush drag a little of
each colour into the other to give a
marbled effect.
