About the Author
Michael Clark
is an internationally pub-
lished outdoor photographer specializing in adven-
ture sports, travel, and landscape photography. He
produces intense, raw images of athletes pushing
their sports to the limit and has risked life and limb
on a variety of assignments to bring back stunning
images of rock climbers, mountaineers, kayakers,
and mountain bikers in remote locations around the
world. He uses unique angles, bold colors, strong
graphics and dramatic lighting to capture leeting
moments of passion, gusto, lair and bravado in the
outdoors. Balancing extreme action with subtle de-
tails, striking portraits and wild landscapes, he cre-
ates images for the editorial, advertising and stock
markets worldwide.
As a former physicist Michael has worked on both
sides of the technical revolution – helping reine the
technology and using it for his current profession. Mi-
chael has worked as a professional photographer since 1996 and added digital photography to his reper-
toire in 2003. He has been featured in
Outdoor Photographer
(September 2001),
Nikon World Magazine
(Summer 2006) and
New Mexico Magazine
(2007) for his work with extreme sports.
He contributes to National Geographic, National Geographic Adventure, Sports Illustrated, Outside, Men’s
Journal, Backpacker, Outdoor Photographer, Digital Photo Pro, Climbing, Bike and The New York Times
among many others. A sampling of Michael’s advertising clients include Nike, Nikon, Adobe, Patagonia,
Propel/Gatorade, Pizer, DuPont, Prana, Arc’teryx, Camelbak, La Sportiva, Gregory Packs, and Butterield
and Robinson.

In the spirit of full disclosure I feel that I must tell the reader that I shot Demo Images for
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Version 1.0 in the Spring of 2006. Processing my images after that as-
signment was my first real world introduction to Lightroom. I am not an employee of Adobe nor do
I have any affiliation with Adobe but I still have a close professional relationship with Adobe. This
workflow is a result of my own efforts to speed up and economize my workflow so that I can spend
less time in front of a computer processing images and more time behind the camera creating images.

Thank you for purchasing this Adobe Photoshop Lightroom overview and workflow. We appreciate your sup-
port! This workflow has been updated for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Version 2.0 and Photoshop CS3.
This worklow covers a large part of the digital experience - at least how I deal with digital imaging. It
is not an exhaustive work, nor its it meant to be. I am sure some of you may have different methods and
experiences than those that I have laid out in this worklow. Your methods are just as valid as mine. For
some of you this might be a worklow that you incorporate into your digital photography exactly as it is
presented which is great. But for most of you, I hope you can ind tricks and tips that can be integrated into
your worklow to suit your speciic imaging needs. There is no worklow that works perfectly for everyone
and I hope you can learn from my worklow to help perfect your own.
As Photoshop in it’s entirety is far beyond the scope of this worklow we go over some basic Photoshop skills
and leave the rest to more advanced books and training. A certain level of Photoshop skill is assumed for
this worklow but even so the examples are very clearly laid out so that you can follow the worklow easily.
And in general, my basic digital worklow does not involve that much Photoshop work - which speaks to
how powerful Lightroom really is. I do continue working images up in Photoshop quite often after they are
processed in Lightroom but those are advanced imaging techniques that are better suited to a workshop
than a worklow eBook.
Digital Photography is still in its infancy and I am certain years from now this time will be considered the
dark ages of digital photography. Even though digital has been around now for over ifteen years, it has
only recently started to be widely accepted by professional photographers and photo buyers. There is
still a lot of work to be done to make the worklow and capture process easier, higher quality and more
consistent. With that said, I have to say I am very excited about Lightroom 2.0. It makes many complex
Photoshop tasks (like masking, layer adjustments, burning and dodging and so many others) a very simple
and non-destructive task that can now be taken care of within Lightroom. I have no doubt that it will help
myself and many other photographers take their images to a new level and with less time in front of the
computer than it would take to do the same local adjustments in Photoshop.
Please consider this worklow (as is any) a work in progress. I would appreciate it if you do not distribute
this worklow to any one else without my permission – this took many hours to put together and represents
over ive years worth of hard work learning the digital game. I appreciate your honesty and integrity
regarding this eBook.
