A sounds like AH as in casa (house)
B sounds like English B as in baño (bathroom) and can also sometimes
sound like “V”
C sounds like English “K” when it comes before: a, o or u - as in casado
C sounds like English “S” when it comes before: e or i - as in cinco (five)
CH sounds like English “CH” as in Chigüire (name of rodent like creature)
D sounds like English “D” as in despacio (slowly)
E sounds like English “EH” as in escritorio (desk)
F sounds like English “F” as in fecha (date)
G sounds like English “H” when it comes before: e or i - as in gente (people)
G sounds like English “G” as in girl any other time - grande (big)
H is always silent as in Hola (Hello)
I sounds like the English hard “E” as in green - Inglés (English)
J guttural sound stronger than English “H” as in hotel - jefe (chief or boss)
K sounds like English “K” as in kilómetro (kilometer)
L sounds like English “L” as in lentes (lenses)
LL sounds like English “Y” as in yes - Me LLamo (my name is)
M sounds like English “M” as in mas (more)
N sounds like English “N” as in necesita (need)
Ñ sounds like English “N” as in onion - enseñeme (teach me)
O sounds like English “OH” as in ocupación (occupation)

P sounds like English “P” as in Pero (but)
Q sounds like English “K” and proceeds U as in que (what)
R sounds like English “R” as in reciba (receives)
RR trilled sound as in burrito and aburrido (bored)
S sounds like English “S” as in sueldo (salary)
T sounds like English “T” as in tengo (I), tiene (has), tenemos (we have),
and tienen (have)
U sounds like English “OO” as in mood - usted (you) or silent after the
letter Q - quince (fifteen)
V sounds like English “V” as in vecino (neighbor)
W rarely used but sounds like English “W” as in whiskey
X sounds like English “H” as in México
Y when standing alone, sounds like the English “EE” as in meek and works
as the English conjunction “and”
Y sounds like English “Y” in a word as in you - De La Hoya
Z sounds like English “S” as in Zorro
