Welcome to The Merck Index Thirteenth Edition on CD-ROM.
This CD-ROM provides a convenient way to browse and search
through The Merck Index. The database provided runs inside
of CS ChemOffice Net. The Merck Index is a ChemFinder
database, which enables you to search by structure and
sub-structure. Before installing ChemOffice Net, please read
this entire file and refer to the section entitled "Known
Issues" at the end of the file.

A tutorial and a sample database are provided to help
familiarize you with the mechanics of using ChemFinder with
The Merck Index database. The tutorial PDF file is
accessible from the main startup screen and can be read
using Adobe Acrobat Reader. To view any PDF document you
must first install Acrobat Reader on your computer.
Installers for Acrobat Reader are available on this CD.
Similarly, to view any HTML file you must have Netscape
Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer installed.

Installing This Application:
============================

To Install - Place The Merck Index CD-ROM in the CD-ROM
drive of your computer to launch The Merck Index Screen.

If you do not have ChemOffice 7.0 installed on your
computer: Click on "Install The Merck Index" button and
follow the on screen instructions to install ChemFinder Net
7.0 and desktop shortcuts to The Merck Index.

If you already have ChemOffice or ChemFinder 7.0 (Net, Pro,
or Ultra) installed on your computer: You may install
desktop shortcuts to The Merck Index by clicking on the
"Create Shortcuts" button on the bottom right corner of The
Merck Index screen.

CS ChemOffice Net 7.0:
----------------------
ChemOffice Net is comprised of two components: ChemDraw
Net and ChemFinder Net. The ChemDraw and
ChemFinder components of ChemOffice Net are the software
packages needed to browse and search this CD-Rom, they also
serve as demonstration versions of ChemDraw Pro and
ChemFinder Pro, respectively.

CS ChemDraw Net:
ChemDraw Net is an application for viewing and printing
2-dimensional chemical structures. You can create your own
structures for searching web databases, and you can view and
print results. ChemDraw Net can also open and print any
ChemDraw file, so it can be used to view work published by
colleagues in the ChemDraw format (ChemDraw is the world's
most popular chemical drawing package!). Please note that
documents you create with ChemDraw Net cannot be printed,
saved, or copied into programs not developed by
CambridgeSoft.

CS ChemFinder Net:
ChemFinder Net is a chemical information browser that also
serves as a demonstration of CS ChemFinder Pro. With
ChemFinder Net you can search and browse ChemFinder
databases, but you can not create new databases, nor export
data.

ChemOffice Net can be reached through the documentation link
on the main page of The Merck Index.  ChemOffice Net manuals
are also available in French, German, and Japanese.  All
foreign language manuals are in the manuals folder on the
CD-ROM.

CambridgeSoft Folder:
---------------------
The latest additions to ChemOffice 2002, ChemDraw 7.0,
Chem3D 7.0, ChemFinder 7.0 and Chem3D 7.0 along with
datasheets can be found in the newfeatures.pdf file located
in the CambridgeSoft folder under the folders English,
French, German and Japanese. The file can be read using
Adobe Acrobat reader.

Multi-Lingual:

To view our informational materials in  French, German, or
Japanese please refer to the manuals folder on the CD-ROM.
All English materials can be found in the documentation
section of the main form of The Merck Index.

ChemNews.Com:
-------------
Recent issues of the ChemNews.Com (formerly the CS Catalyst)
in HTML format are located in the ChemNews.Com folder. These
issues are available in French, German, and Japanese as well
as in English.

Just double-click on the "index.html" file in the
ChemNews.Com folder to use your Web browser to navigate
through these issues; or you may start your browser and
enter the filename of any issue you wish to see.

PDF documents of all ChemNews.Com issues are available in
the English folder; look in the ChemNews.Com subfolder. To
view the PDF files, you must install the Adobe Acrobat
reader. An installer,
ACROREAD.EXE, can be started from autorun screen of the
CD-ROM. A Japanese version of Acrobat reader is located in
the Japanese folder.

CS Product Datasheets:
----------------------
Datasheets of CS products are located in the Datasheets
subfolder inside each language folder. The datasheets are in
PDF format and require the Adobe Acrobat Reader, as
described above.

TechNotes:
----------
Technical notes can be found in a file called faqs.html
located in the CambridgeSoft folder of The Merck Index
CD-Rom folder under the support directory.


Known Issues:
-------------
You must have ChemFinder 7.0 installed on your computer to
view The Merck Index data.
