Welcome to the 30th birthday issue of Professional Photographer.
Although the magazine launched 40 years ago, it was in 1980 that the name
changed from the original Industrial & Commercial Photographer to
ProfessionalPhotographer. Thirty is always a landmark birthday, so it
seemed appropriate to celebrate the anniversary and invite some old and
new friends to our party.
The new friends come in the shape of all of our Professional Photographer of the
Year Award winners. The standard of entries this year was incredible and the judges
had a hard time choosing the winners, but they finally agreed on a winner for each category and an overall winner.
You can see them all in the supplement that comes with this issue and read the judges’ comments.
We then decided to celebrate by giving all of our readers presents for all your support over the years. Not only
have we put together over £3,000 worth of great photographic kit for you to win on page 16 , we have
also spoken to 30 of the world’s greatest photographers and asked them to give us their top 10 tips to succeed in
300 Secrets to Success on page 51.
When it comes to straightforward advice based on experience, David Bailey is a past master. I’ve been lucky
enough to work with him on a number of occasions and was able to bring those experiences into my conversation
with him on page 82 in Bailey On The Phone.
Tim Bret-Day began shooting fashion in the eighties and is now achieving international acclaim with his images
for Agent Provocateur and Harvey Nichols. He gives his views on the state of the industry and where he feels it’s
going in The Maverick on page 74.
Working in a very different environment, but just as aware of the current evolution
of photography, is American photojournalist Danfung Dennis.
He tells us what it’s like to work on the frontline in Afghanistan in Embedded on page 72.
Another photographer who has sought photographic inspiration in
Afghanistan is commercial photographer Martin Middlebrook.
After a serious illness at the beginning of the year, we’re pleased
to say he’s now fully recovered and able to tell us how he used
personal projects to re-ignite his career. Read how he did it in
This Time It’s Personal on page 90.
No birthday is complete without sharing past experiences. So we take
a look at how the covers of Professional Photographer have evolved
over the last 30 years in Covered on page 46. As for the future, could
it belong to the Leica S2 ? Lifestyle and food photographer
David Loftus certainly thinks so in Me Leica on page 92.
Whereas extreme landscape photographer Colin Prior is definitely
taken with the Nikon D3s in You Can Take Me Higher on page 94.
Add all our regular contributors to the mix and I hope you’ll
agree that our special collector’s edition delivers inspiration,
information, a little education and, like the best parties, just
