introDUCtion
American children growing up in the
1960s
through the 1990s enjoyed a special weekly ritual: Sat-
urday morning cartoons. Kids would shovel down their Lucky
Charms and gather around the tube to watch shows like the
Flintstones
and
Scooby-Doo
. They laughed at animated char-
acters such as a tiny superhero named Mighty Mouse, a slow-
witted kid called Fat Albert, a l ying squirrel named Rocky,
and a moose named Bullwinkle. They could hardly wait for
Saturday, when they could see their favorite programs again
for one magical morning of the week.
You live in a different world—where entire channels like
Nickelodeon and the Cartoon Network broadcast both new
and classic animated shows 24/7. It may be hard to picture
a TV universe that isn’t teeming with cartoons. Any channel-
surfer can tell you that lots of the most popular shows on TV
today are animated:
SpongeBob SquarePants, South Park,
Powerpuff Girls
, and of course
The Simpsons
—the longest run-
ning sitcom in American history. Animation is not just for kids
anymore—plenty of adults are hooked on these shows, too.
Many of the commercials playing on TV today also depend on
animation for their special effects.
