The 2010 U.S. Open and Jerry Hanken Memorial
take place in Irvine, California from July 31-
August 8th. See CLO for updates, including

member and a friend of Jerry. Numerous side
events, including the Denker Tournament of High
School Champions, the College Tournament of
Champions, and the brand new Girls Junior
Open will also be covered.

U.S. Senior Open
The U.S. Senior Open returns to Boca Raton, Florida from
August 23-28. CLO coverage will include games and stories
from the scene. GM Larry Christiansen (right) is the
defending champion. Former champion GM Larry Kaufman
will be blogging from the site.

in the June 2009 Chess Life .
FM Alec Getz
(“Scholastics,” p. 22) His
recent accomplishments include
leading Hunter High School
to the USATE co-championship
and the National High School
Championship. In addition to
his individual National High
School co-championship, he
got his second international
master norm this year at the
Philadelphia Open. He has
previously written for Chess
Life about winning the gold
medal at the Pan American
Championships U16 in 2008.
Alec will be entering the 11th
grade in the fall of 2010.
U.S. Chess League Season Begins with Three New Teams
The sixth season of the U.S. Chess League begins on August 23rd and it promises
to be bigger and stronger than ever. Joining the fray are the Los Angeles Vibe, the
St. Louis Archbishops and the New England Nor’Easters. Roster additions and
changes include number-one ranked GM Hikaru Nakamura and GM Ben Finegold
for St. Louis, renowned coach and player, Melikset Khachiyan (for the Vibe) and author
and star IM David Vigorito (for the Nor’Easters.) Look for cover-

Labor Day Madness Creeps Closer
August features a number of big grand prix events
outside the U.S. Open, including the Continental
Open in Sturbridge (August 12-15) and the
Atlantic Open (August 27-29). These two events
precede a host of state championship events on
Labor Day weekend that comprise what the late
Jerry Hanken coined “Labor Day chess madness.”
