BEM 5000
USER GUIDE
BEM 5000 co-ordinates the operation of Central Heating and Hot Water systems.
Using outside air temperature BEM 5000 automatically adjusts the temperature of the water flowing to
the radiators, matching as closely as possible available heat as generated by the boiler to that required
by the house. This process ensures that the boiler only runs when it is absolutely necessary. This feature
is known as "Weather Compensation".
During periods of Hot Water demand the weather compensation is temporarily overridden, and water at
the boiler thermostat setting will flow to both Heating and Hot Water circuits. As soon as the Hot Water
tank is at the required temperature, the unit will revert to its energy saving mode.
During operation, the pump will on many occasions continue to run for some time after the boiler has
turned off, this is intended and adds significantly to the efficiency of the system.
During "Saving" periods, heat can be added to the system by temporarily turning the compensator OFF
using the front panel switch.

BEM 5000 SETTING AND INDICATORS

Your installer will have adjusted your BEM 5000 controller as far as possible in the conditions and time
available (normally 10 for standard boiler, and 5 for condensing boiler).
To obtain the very maximum efficiency we recommend that you re-adjust it during cold, frosty conditions
after which no further adjustments will be necessary regardless of weather changes.
HEATING INDICATOR

for heat (if fitted)
With the heating on, the building warm, a full tank of hot water and the water supply hot:
1.
Ensure that the boiler thermostat is set to maximum and left there.
2.
Turn the radiator thermostats, and if fitted the room thermostat, to maximum.

Allow half an hour or so for the room temperature to stabilize.

The temperature should be slightly warmer than desirable (23-24°C if you are aiming for 21°C).

If this is the case go to step 6 below. If not then you need to adjust the Response Rate. The dial
is marked in divisions.
The setting should be increased to raise the room temperature or reduced to lower it. Make only
small changes - no more than one division at a time.
When you have made an adjustment, carry on again from step 3 above.

The BEM 5000 is now set. Room temperature adjustments should, from now on, be made by
means of the radiator thermostats, or if fitted, the room thermostat.
7.
Should a higher room temperature be required for a short period, simply turn the compensator
switch to the OFF position. This turns off the savings function, boosting the flow temperature to
that of the boiler thermostat. Remember to return this switch to the ON position after this short
period.

Increase setting if house is consistantly
under-heated, reduce setting if over-
heated
