How to Cheat in Photoshop
3D modeling applications

anything you can imagine directly in
Photoshop – if you have the time and the skill
– there are times when a basic 3d modeling
application can help you out of a tight spot.
First of all, let me lay my cards on the table:
I hate 3d modelers. I loathe the intricacies of
nurbs and B-splines, and resent the time taken
sitting around waiting for models to render.
That’s why I still like
Adobe Dimensions
,
the veteran 3d program. It can perform just
two basic functions: extruding (adding depth)
and revolving (lathing a profile). But where it
really scores is is ability to export PostScript
artwork – in the form of Illustrator objects. This
means they’re infinitely scalable, and so can be
enlarged to any size you like. rendering time is
just a few seconds; after that, you can take the
model into Photoshop and enhance it.
dimensions hasn’t been updated since 1997,
and suffers a number of drawbacks: it’s clumsy,
buggy, and none of the keyboard shortcuts
work with recent operating system releases.
The trick with dimensions is not to
expect too much from it. while it is capable
of rendering shading from multiple light
sources, because it exports PostScript artwork
the shading is created as stepped blends;
some blurring is often needed afterwards in
Photoshop to fix this.
Much of dimensions’ functionality has
been built into
Adobe Illustrator
. But what
Illustrator’s missing is the ability to group
several objects together and change their
viewpoint as a whole: you can only work with
one 3d object at a time. which makes it fine
for simple tasks such as the washing-up liquid
bottle shown here, but means it’s harder to use
for more complex jobs that require multiple
revolves or extrusions.
Both dimensions and Illustrator illustrations
occasionally go wrong: bits will be missing
when the illustration is rendered, for instance.
There’s no support for transparency, and the
texturing is laughable.
For the Photoshop artist who simply wants
to get a quick model to work on, both programs
allow you to knock up a basic shape, view it
from any angle and at any perspective, and
then import it into Photoshop for detailed
editing. over the next few pages we’ll look at
some of the artwork created using dimensions
and Illustrator models as their base.
I won’t go through a step by step tutorial
showing how to create the original models in
dimensions and Illustrator; that would take
a separate book. Instead we’ll look at how to
make these simple PostScript models come
to life, using the tools and techniques in
Photoshop.
