RHODE ISLAND IS AN UNFORGETTABLE
destination. This tiny New England state is
a gem, boasting a rich and dramatic history,
hundreds of miles of breathtaking beaches
and attractions for the entire family.
Rhode Islanders like to say that their
state is America’s fi rst resort. As early as the
1520s, explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano
sailed the islands of Narragansett Bay.
In 1636, Roger Williams founded Rhode
Island as a place of respite for those seeking
religious freedom. During the Colonial
period, Rhode Island was a haven for fol-
lowers of several different religions, making
it the location of many religious fi rsts. Prov-
idence is home to the First Baptist Church
of America, established in 1638. In addi-
tion, North America’s fi rst Quaker meeting
house, built in the 1600s, and the fi rst Jew-
ish house of worship, Touro Synagogue,
built in 1763, still stand in Newport.
Coming into the 1900s, Rhode Island
was still considered the country’s premier

Benefi t Street’s “Mile of History,” located on
Providence’s East Side, has what is consid-
ered to be the most impressive collection of
original Colonial homes in the U.S. It boasts
200 pristine eighteenth- and nineteenth-
century buildings, antique gas lamps and
brick sidewalks.
