Topping Ideas

INTRODUCTION:
I started out with the idea of showing an example card made
from each of our New Foiled Toppers, but as the ideas flowed
I found that I had made
more and more cards and
may even have got a little
carried away! I hope you
find lots of inspiration
from them.
BLACK & WHITE TRAIN:
CDT505G B/W Train.
CRC233P Cog Card.
XL764U-02, XL775U-02 & -03.
PET01 Acetate.
MTR09-02 Tiffany Ribbon.
BRD170 Silver Brads.
Black Card.
Score the printed card sheet
and fold in half to make the
base card. Trim a 58mm wide
strip from the open edge of the
front panel then cut this strip in
half down its length. Cut a strip
of acetate to 45mm wide x the
length of the card and run d/s
tape down both edges.
Fold the card, place the acetate
in position so the tape along one side is behind the open edge then, holding
the acetate in place, lift the front panel, peel the backing and re-fold the card
over it. Peel the other backing and place one of the cog card strips into place
aligning the edges with the back panel edges.
Decorate the acetate strip with silver cogs from the sheet, start with a large
cog, stick onto a piece of acetate then mount on sticky fixers about 20mm
from the bottom edge. Stick more cogs in different sizes onto the acetate
strip, trimming them at the top and bottom edges.
Mount the train picture onto
black card using fixers and
decorate the corners using
waste from the cog stickers.
Press the train tag from the
sheet then roughly cut out
the spare (empty) foil border
that’s left behind on the
sheet. Stick this frame to a
piece of black card then cut
to the foil edge to make a
black tag for the greeting.
Use a little Tiffany ribbon through the tags and
hold in place with a punched circle of black
card and a screw brad.
Glue the lower end of each tag to the card and
add the black wording along the edge of the
panel as shown.
SEPIA CAR:
CDT507G Sepia Cars.

Scrap of Brown Card and Gold Thread.
This is made in the same way with a few little
changes. Cut the card closer to the fold so the
large panel fits at the right and decorate the
acetate as before. I’ve added a brown card layer
to the top of the layered cog with waste stickers
pieces for the pattern and used the toothed bor-
der strips along the left edge of the acetate.
The cogs which the tags hang from are layered
using sticky fixers and I liked the cord on these
tags stretched taut as it gives an impression of
belts and pulleys. Use fixers behind the tags to
raise them off the card.
COLOURED TRAIN:
CDT503G Coloured Train; CRC233P Cog Card; XL408U-03, XL764U-02 &
ZL764U-53; Scraps of Silver Mirri, Black & White Card; SF01C-174 Dark Grey.
The waste strip cut from the cog card (above) is matted onto white, black and
silver card to make the border on this card. Cut a white panel to go behind the
main image, curve the image and stick in place with sticky fixers.
Use a 35mm circle punch to cut a hole in the front panel, add a cog sticker over
the hole, then use another of the same pattern on the inside to cover the back of
it. Use a mix of sizes and colours of cogs across the bottom of the card, layer some
up on acetate to add depth.
Stick the main cog over the border onto acetate and mount using a little double
sided tape in the centre. Stick the train circle onto the grey disc punched from
the card front and mount over the cog using sticky fixers.

BLACK & WHITE SIDE STEPPER CARD:
CDT508G B/W Cars; ST01U-30 White; XL741U-02 & -03; Scraps of
Black Card; MTR39-01 & MTR39-85 Ribbon.
Mount the two toppers for the main panel onto black card and cut to
leave a 3mm border. Mount these onto the card overlap-
ping as shown and using sticky fixers for the front one.
Stick the left hand topper onto the back side-step
by the bottom half only so the top half sticks up
above the panel.
Stick the flags, but not the poles, to black card then
cut out. Shape the flags with your fingers to give a
rippled effect then mount using sticky fixers under
them, stick the poles directly onto the card.
Cut a piece of acetate 17mm wide x 25mm tall
and stick the cup onto it with the handles off the
edges. Trim the acetate to the cup.
Thread a bit of grey, and black ribbon through each
handle. Use sticky fixers on the cup and glue on
the handles and ribbon. Make a plinth for the cup
from black card, add the 1st sticker to it and mount
below the cup with a fixer pad.
Add the black ‘speed racer’ stickers then overlay
the letters from the silver sheet onto them.

This collection using flower toppers with dotty papers shows how they
can be used to make both bold & bright or soft & subtle designs.
Score and fold both end panels of the double fold card in half, then
fold them back on themselves to make a gatefold card.
Cover just the two front half-panels
with the dotty paper and add strips
of blackcurrant card across them as
shown. Choose the two large toppers
shown and mount onto the card,
making sure not to glue where they
overlap the other panel.
Add the narrow topper to the bottom
left then use the foiled edge from the
sheet as before (train card) to make
the mum panel. Matt onto blackcur-
rant card and stick in place. Add the
banner sticking the part that is on the
right panel only. Add the
butterflies and gems as
shown.
The card slides open by
pulling apart at the open
ends of the front panels to
reveal the inner decoration
(see small picture), which
will show when the card is
displayed. For the inside
I’ve used striped paper
with a rope border. Pieces
from the ‘mum’ sheet are
layered onto this then peel
off flowers are used to
embellish them.
The other two cards are
made using the same
method, use the pictures
for guidance. You can
change the strong colours
for pastel if you prefer the
more subtle look.

I tried to stop there but found I had so
many lovely toppers left, and I hadn’t
even used my favourite one, the or-
ange petals with raindrops on. So I
just kept on going and here are some
more ideas.
CENTRE OPENING CARDS:
These centre opening cards are made
in just the same way as the large
dotty cards on the previous page, but
using one tall thin card (DF08U-30)
cut in half to make two small ones, and at 100mm square, each
card fits a standard size envelope. They slide open in the same way
as the larger cards.
I’ve placed the small raindrop petal topper on the right front panel
of the green card in such a way that it is completely hidden behind
the large one on the left hand panel, and only shows as you slide
the card open.
On the pink card the hidden panel is just a slightly nar-
rower oblong topper. The foiled corners from the topper
sheet look lovely on the corners of the card over the pink
texture paper. I’ve also tied a length of dark pink ribbon
through the top of the tag.
SIMPLE & STYLISH CARDS:
If simple and stylish is how you like your cards, these toppers can do that too.
I have used the pastel stripes paper (SR205P & SR206P) to emphasise the
height of these designs. Place the oval topper over a band of ribbon using
sticky fixers to add depth, with a gem either side of the panel and small,
simple wording in the bottom corner. Just a little more showy is the band of
strong colour down the centre with
a contrast bow.
The toppers don’t need to be oval,
other shapes work nicely too.
