This week’s tutorial is a bit long (albeit fun), so I’ll forego any fancy intro and get right to
the grids. I should (an will) give honorable mention to Colin for the inspiration behind this
tutorial. He has spent a lot of time working with grids, so please check out further tutorials
on the subject on his website ( http://www.photoshopcafe.com ).

To begin, create a new image with the following dimensions:
• Preset Size= 800 x 600
• Resolution= 72 dpi
• Mode= unimportant, but I’m using RGB
• Contents= White
Open the Channels palette. Click the Create new channel icon on the bottom of the palette.
Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool in the toolbox. Set the following attributes in the options
bar for the tool:
• Selection type= new selection
• Feather= 0
• Style= Normal
Make a vertical rectangle selection and fill it with white. It need not be very big; maybe a
half inch wide and and inch and a half tall.
Fill the selection with white, 100% opacity.
Select the move tool. With the arrow keys, move the selection down one click and to the
right one click.
Fill the selection with Black, opacity 100%.

With the arrow keys. Move the selection back to its original position.
Go to Edit>Define Pattern.
A dialog box will appear asking you to name the pattern. Name it then click ok. The pattern
will now be available to apply to your images.
Return to the Layers palette. Create a new layer.
Select the Rectangular Marquee tool again. Make a large rectangular selection in the new
layer covering most (not all) of the layer.
Go to Edit>Fill. Change the fill type to Patterns, and select the newly defined pattern for the
fill.
Go to Image>Adjust>Invert (Cmd/CTRL+I).
Hit the D key to reset the foreground and background colors to default (black, white
respectively).
Go to Edit>Stroke. Enter the following settings in the Stroke dialog box:
Width= 1
Location= inside
Mode= normal
Opactiy= 100%

Click OK.
Do to Select>Deselect (Cmd/CTRL+D).
Your grid should look something like this:
The way the grid is set up now, the grid blocks are filled with white in the layer. That needs
to be separated from the lines. Go to Select>Color Range. With the eyedropper tool, select
white grom the grid.
Hit the Delete key. You should still have the grid pattern, made up of only lines with no white
in the layer.
Go to Edit>Transform>Perspective.

In the options bar, there is a window called set horizontal skew. Change this number to –15.
Hit the enter key.
Duplicate the grid layer.
Go to Edit>Transform>Flip Vertical. Hit enter to accept the transform.
Go to Edit>Transform>Distort. In the Options bar, change the Height value of the layer to
80%. .
Hit enter to accept the transform.
Select Layer 1.

Go to Edit>Transform>Distort. Change the Height setting to 75%.
Hit Enter.
You can move the layers with the Move tool to make the horizontal axis of the grids overlap.
