BeauJolais goes PosH
the southern part of Bourgogne, Beaujolais, has never really been to the taste
of the wine snobs. But now the times are a changing. Many of the most promi-
nent producers in the area have joined forces to Lift up the region’s standing in
a massive marketing ofensive. our problem is that we have 10 quality orien-
tated wine producers that nobody’s ever heard of. We are the only wine district
in the world who is known for its table wines and not for its best wines. Many
believe as well that there is some kind of industrial production process behind
our wines. that is wrong, it is the craftsmanship of the wine industry. As Jean
Fourcade, Ceo of the regions professional amalgamation stated recently.
the initial thrust of the campaign will be to organize great tasting events of
the regions best wines.
one tasting will be in France and another somewhere in europe… and the
third?…. Where else the Good old U.s of A.

the inancial crisis is causing tribula-
tions in the wine industry. Particularly
the section that occupies itself with

around the world are reporting dras-
tically reduced prices, buy backs and
noticeably receding sales curves. What
is rather surprising however is that we
are talking about the most exclusive of
all wines, Romèe Conti. It was recently
reported from an auction in Chicago
that a bottle of the 1990 vintage,
which less than a year ago sold for sek:
150 000:-
Went under the hammer for a paltry
sek:50 000:-, that’s a price cut of 67%.

two of the most prominent wine makers in south Africa, ex-
hibited their wines in a vertical tasting in stockholm a few
weeks ago. It was Cornelis Dumas from Jacobsdal and Danie
Malan from Allesveloren. We tasted the Pinotage 2005 from
Jacobsdal and all the way back to 1996.From Allesveloren
we tried the port, that is to say the Fine old Vintage from
1998 up to 2005. the Allesveloren tasting
was attended by Mr. s R (Zeph) Makgetia,
the south African ambassador to stockholm. “next year,”
Dannie pointed out, “we have our 350 year’s jubilee of wine
production in south Africa. It was back in 1659 that the irst
barrels of south African wine landed in europe.
It created a lot of interest back then ….as it still does today!

garding the upcoming drinks auction. More as always from Britt and Johan, this time
they’re on the ground in sicily and southern Rousillon. Johan Magnusson imparts to
us more pearls of wisdom and knowledge from his wine cellar. so dear readers, a warm
welcome to a well stocked number of Fine Wine magazine. We have saying up here in
the frozen north of europe. “there’s no such thing as bad weather….. only the wrong

You don’t say no to sicilian wine. today of course for completely different reasons than in the
old days.the quality has taken enormous leaps forward and the island has managed to mollify
both the aficionados of the classic as well as the new world of wines.

It WAsn’t so LonG ago that for the
majority of us, Sicily was synony-
mous with the Maia. Jokingly
the Island’s wine was turned into
a hideous pun by some Swed-
ish wine journalist. based on the
Swedish word “Maig” meaning
“groovy”, it became the “Maig
Maia Wine from Sicily ”, a sort of
slightly naughty “Underworld of
Organized Wine” , drink it out of
dark glasses, gangster tipple.
Today these wines are certainly still
“Maig” but they are also so much
more. Notching up top prices in
the international wine arenas.
but let’s start at the beginning. he
boat from Trapani, on Sicily’s west coat
has just begun its voyage south.
It’s BLoWInG HARD and the at-
mosphere on board is apprehen-
sive. Many travelers ind a place
for themselves on the deck, in a
futile attempt to sleep away the
nightmarish journey, as the waves
rise ever higher after the hours of
darkness set in. but after a six hour
watch in hell, the Mediterranean
suddenly becomes dead calm and
like a little specks of dirt the Is-
lands begin to rise up from the ho-
rizon, far in front of us. Pantelle-
ria, the Isle of the Golden wine. So
like the opening shot on a journey
of exploration in the service of Fine
Wine, our way forward is clear.
the heathens call them Moscato di
Alexandria, it’s time to pack the old
bags again and make my way back
to Sicily again. A journey that will
turn the perspective on it’s head,
as we will board the magniicent
island from a completely diferent
point of departure.
Suddenly Sicily has become part
of the northern hemisphere’s com-
mon wealth. My circumnaviga-
tion of the island kicks of a little
bit inland, in the south west, a few
miles to the north of the pretty
coastal town of Agrigento.
It is a rather cool forenoon and the
local weather boys have predicted
rain. A picture that is not quite in
tune with the sunny island. he
rain held of however as the car
skidded into the gravel forecourt
of Planetas Winery.
tHe FIRst tIMe I was here, which
was about 10 years ago,
this wine company had achieved
cult status and was still
relatively unknown. Today it’s a
diferent story, the company has
enjoyed an incomparable, almost
fairy tale success. Planeta exports
wine to the world’s most impor-
tant markets. he winery, which
is situated at the head of a man-
made lake, is the irst of a total
of four on the Island. 10 years
