EVALUATION
WHAT AND WHY?
In relation to WHAT and HOW MUCH In relation to HOW the students
students have learned, e.g. through tests have been learning, e.g. whether
and quizes. groupwork is effective, if they
receive enough guidance, etc.
Most common in ELT. Encourages students to take
control over their learning and
gives the teacher insight into
how students see their language
classes.
Ø Initially, it’s likely that the students’ evaluation of how they’ve been learning will be very superficial. It requires practice.
Ø Limit the time for an evaluation discussion and give the students a clear focus for any group discussion.
Ø Avoid asking negative questions as they will produce negative answers. It’s better to ask “What do you think about…”.
Ø Evaluation can involve students after any major piece of work or period of time.
