FOREWORD
On these encounter tables,
you generate the monster type
(animal, giant, humanoid, etc)
and then roll for the specific
monster. Why? Reason one is that
I can accommodate more than 100
monsters per climate and terrain
type.
Also, if a druid/ranger
casts animal companion or
sorcerer/wizards summons
familiar, should you get a toad
in a desert? Of course not. These
tables neaten things up for you
if you wish to limit the
possibilities by climate and
terrain.

Encounter Check Procedures
I. If I present any “rule” you don’t agree with, change it (i.e. if you think 15% is too low, make it
78%, go ahead).
II. Check for the chance to get lost (Wilderness Lore DC 9). If the party does get lost, roll a d6 to
determine new route of progress; (1905 in the illustration below is the hex number; my campaign
maps use number hexagons):
III. If desired, check the Temperature, Wind Speed and Chance of Precipiation on Table I, below.
IV. The possibility of an encounter is 15% per 4 hours (non-cumulative).
If an encounter is indicated, check to determine the type of encounter.

Monster Encounters are detailed in sections I., II. and III. (Cold, Temperate and Warm,
respectively).
A Note about my maps. I often include multiple symbols in a hex; thus you might see a
mountain, a hill and a tree in the same hex with a brown background. What’s up with that? On my
maps, the background color gives the hex’s main composition:

Green Forest
Light Blue Water
Orange Hills
Pale Green Swamp
Tan Plains
Yellow Desert
If a hex contains two colors, the choice depends on the direction of travel. However, trudging
through the hex with multiple symbols gives you the Dungeon Master the option of picking one of
those alternate wildernesses (to break things up if the encounters are getting stale).
