Jak pisać listy nieformalne?

§         W prawym górnym rogu wpisz swój adres i datę.

§         Pisząc datę użyj formatu: 15 January, 2005 (albo January 15, 2005).

§         Mimo że Twój list będzie czytał nauczyciel bądź egzaminator, wobraź sobie, że piszesz do przyjaciela.

§         Zatytułuj list, np. Dear Joan, My dearest Joan itp.

§         Rozpoczynając list, nawiąż do listu, który wcześniej dostałeś/aś od przyjaciela. Podziękuj za niego i wytłumacz czemu nie odpisywałeś/aś tak długo. Możesz użyć zwrotów takich jak: Thank you for your letter. It was nice to hear from you. (Dziękuję za Twój ostatni list. Miło było usłyszeć co u Ciebie), It was very kind of you to write (To było bardzo miłe, że napisałeś), I am sorry for the delay in answering your letter (Przepraszam za opóźnienie w odpowiedzi na Twój list), I'm sorry I haven't written to you for such a long time (Przepraszam, że tak długo nie pisałem). Zauważ, że w języku angielskim nie kapitalizujemy zwrotów "you", tak jak w polskim. W angielskim kapitalizuje się tylko "I" (ja).

§         Możesz używać form ściągniętych, np. zamiast "I am" napisać "I'm", a także słów łączących jak: well (więc), by the way (przy okazji), even though (chociaż), in spite of (pomimo, że), nevertheless (pomimo to), so (więc), anyway (tak czy owak).

§         Możesz także używać pytań w stylu "Do you know that...?" (Wiesz, że...?).

§         Na zakończenie listu spytaj o zdrowie, rodzinę i ewentualnie zaproponuj spotkanie. Pozdrów adresata i jego rodzinę.

§         Na zakończenie użyj zwrotów w stylu: Looking forward to seeing you (Czekam na spotkanie z Tobą), Give my regards to (Pozdrów), See you soon (Do zobaczenia wkrótce), (Best) love (coś w stylu "uściski"), Best wishes (Najlepsze życzenia), With all my love (Z całą moją miłością), Your sincere friend (Twój szczery przyjaciel), XX (symbol pocałunku) itp.

§         Podpis powinien znajdować się bezpośrednio pod zwrotem pożegnalnym.

A letter about dieting

Dear Barbara,

Thank you for your last letter. It was nice to hear from you. You wrote that you wanted to lose weight and as it turns out I read an article about dieting. If you want to be slimmer and stay healthy, the first thing you should do is to go to your doctor. He's the person who knows the best what to eat and what to do when you are on a diet. Remember that majority of people fall into anorexia as they want to be slimmer and slimmer even when they look fine. Afterwards, first they have cravings for food and they eat a lot of sweets or other kind of junk food, next they throw it up not to put on weight. Thus, you must promise me that you will diet rationally.

As I mentioned before, I read an article that you can find on www.chatelaine.com. You can find out a lot of interesting facts on this site. At first your doctor will tell you the program of diet and exercise. Visit him regularly so he can monitor your progress. Remember that one of the most important things is to exercise because that will help you lose some calories and work on your muscles. Don't worry if your scale shows you higher weight because muscles weight more than fat. After few months you will look more muscular and you will get closer to your ideal body.

Apart from exercising your doctor will tell you what to eat or which dishes you shouldn't mix. If you don't see the results of the regimen you were recommended within few months, you should ask for some weight-loss drugs. However, you must take into account that these can have serious side effects. That's why you will have to tell your doctor if you suffer from any disease.

After what I have written you must think it's hard to reach your ideal weight but it's not unattainable. I also read about a woman who succeed in dieting. She realized that she couldn't lose weight in short time, that's why she decided to change her eating habits. She cut her portions in half, ate more fruit and vegetables and she always felt full. That woman also drank lots of water and started exercising: she was riding a bike and walking to work. In the mornings she was spending an hour on exercising. Her colleague kept her on track by eating healthy what rubbed off on the other and by motivating her. In this way she had control of her body.

I hope you will listen to me and go to a doctor who will tell you what to do. I'm sure you will reach your goal. Do keep in touch and let me know what you decide.

Sincerely,
Marta

A letter of apology

Situation: You promised to visit an English friend while on a visit to the town where he/she lives, but you were unable to do so. Write a letter apologising and explaining the reasons.

Dear Gosia,

Thank you for your letter that I got three weeks ago. I'm pleased to hear that everything is well with you and that you already have got a job. I'm very sorry that i haven't replied to your letter earlier but I've had a hectic time after I had come back from England.

At first I'd like to apologise to you that I didn't visit you in Cardiff. I really didn't have any free time during the trip. We got up in the morning, then went to see the town and we had only two hours a day to go shopping without the whole group. I know that I had promised to meet you in Cardiff but please, try to understand me.

I must bring to a close now because it's already late and I have to get up early tomorrow. I promise to write again within the next week. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes
Marta

A letter to parents

Situation: You came to London a month ago to study English. Write a letter to your parents telling them about the course you are taking and some of the difficulties you have encountered.

Dear Mum and Dad,

I was glad to hear that everything is fine with you. I'm sorry I haven't written for a month. I've had a hectic time trying to enroll in an English course and I had some difficulties. That course will help prepare me for an exam, after which I'll be able to get a well-paid job.

First, there was a problem with commuting to school. At the beginning I lived in the suburbs of London and it was too far to get to school in time. I could be late for the classes every day or simply move out to another place. I was sitting on the fence, but fortunately a friend of mine asked me to live with her.

However, the course had already started and I had missed a few classes. I didn't know it would result so negatively for me. The headmaster warned me of deleting me from the list of students in case of my next missed lesson. I managed to explain myself and promised it would never happen again.

That's all for now. I must study for tomorrow's test. Pass my kisses to grandparents.

Best wishes and Love,
Marta

A letter of request

Situation: You are going away for a week and you are hoping a friend of yours will be willing to call round to feed your pet(s) and water your plants. Write a letter to your friend explaining the problem and asking for his/her help.

My dearest Beata,

At first I want to thank you for your last mail. I was very pleased that you let me know everything is well with you. I'm sorry for the delay in answering but I've been preparing to my trip to the Czech Republic.

However, I would like to ask you a favour connected with that trip. I thought that my neighbour would take care of my cat and plants but she's visiting her family then. Would be please be willing to call round to feed my cat one a day and to water my plants? You live next to me and you're the only person I can ask for it. I'm only going for a week on 1st December and I'll be back on 7th December in the morning.

I must finish because I have to pack myself. I'd be grateful if you could help me.

Best wishes,
Marta

A letter of thanks

Situation: You recently stayed with an English penfriend and his or her family. Write a letter thanking them for their hospitality.

My dearest Michael,

I was very pleased to read in your last letter that everything is well with you and you already have plans for the New Year's Eve. I still don't know where I will go but nevermind the place, the most important is that I will spend it with my boyfriend. I'm sorry for not writing since holidays but I've been very busy and actually, nothing special has happened since then.

I wanted to tell you that all the time I spent with you and your family in England was great. Thank you very much for your hospitality. I enjoy the fact that we finally could have met face-to-face, instead of e-mail correspondence. I hope you didn't have much trouble with letting me stay at your house. I've always dreamt about visiting London. Next holidays I invite you to my place. I'm sure you'll like it here.

That's all for now. Give my warmest regards to your family. I hope you'll write some news soon.

Love,
Marta

A letter to an English friend

Situation: An English friend of yours is going to take an important examination soon. Write a letter wishing your friend good luck and offering any advice you can.

My dearest Magda,

I was glad to read the news about you in your last letter. Finally I have time to reply to it, sorry that you had to wait for it for such a long time.

From your letter I know that you'll take an important examination in geography next month. I'm sure you'll get an A as I already know that it's one of your favourite subjects. You also told me once that you have very good notes so there's no possibility that you'll fail. Cheer up and don't worry. However, if you have some problems in geography, you can be sure that I'll give you any advices you want. You can always rely on me.

That's all for now. I wish you good luck on that exam and I hope that you'll let me know about the results as soon as possible.

Best wishes,
Marta

A letter to a friend from Wales

Hi Kalina,

What's up! Thanks for your last letter and your Sunday's call. It was really nice to hear you after such a long time.

You wanted to know how I'm getting on... Well, there's nothing new besides one thing. You already know I'm defending my master's thesis in June but you know what else? I'm having an FCE exam at nearly the same time! However, I wish I would be able to defend master's thesis on the first possible date, and from what I've heard today, it's fixed on 10th June. OK, let's leave me for a moment.

What about you? Do you enjoy your new life in Cardiff? Do you still have the same job or maybe you've found a better one? I hope we'll meet when you come to Olsztyn in May so that you could tell me all the details about your job, new friends, that city etc. We'll also have to talk over my visit at your place on holidays. I can't wait to see London and Cardiff, I've always dreamt of that trip.

That's all for now. I hope to see you soon, so let me know when exactly you are coming to Poland. Hit me back when you have some free time.

Love,
Marta

A letter to an English friend

Situation: An English friend of yours is planning to spend a week touring your country and has asked for your advice on what to see and do. Write a letter giving your friend practical information which you think will be helpful.

Dear Alex,

At first I want to thank you for your last letter and for the marvelous news that you're going to tour Poland. I'm very sorry for the delay in answering but I've had a hectic time preparing to some exams.

You asked me what is worth seeing in Poland. I'd enjoy the time spending with you and I'd show you the Old Town and the Castle in my city. We'd go play bowling or billiards and then go shopping. The next day we'd visit some towns like Gietrzwałd or Święta Lipka. I'd show you some interesting monuments and beautiful landscapes. If there is enough time, we'd also go to Toruń which is gorgeous. There is a big planetarium so we'd see the demonstration.

Well, that's all for now. Let me know in you next letter what you've decided.

Best wishes,
Marta

A letter about the trip

Dear Anna,

Thank you for the postcard. I was so glad to hear you had a wonderful time in Italy. I've been there few times so I know it's a wonderful place. I'm sorry I haven't written to you for such a long time but I went to the Czech Republic for a week. Before that I had had a hectic time planning my trip which was very spontaneous, as it was planned in the very last moment.

To start with, we were driving to Prague for one day. After arrival to Luna Hotel in the morning and taking some rest, we visited Karlove Vary. We have seen countless of interesting places and I don't even remember all names. One of the most interesting buildings was the Cathedral of St. Barbara. The architectural beauty was seen from outside as well as from inside. I was worn out after the whole day of sightseeing so I went to bed at once.

The next day we visited Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. It is one of the most interesting places I have ever been to. I loved the architecture of the buildings, which were decorated with many patterns. It just looked glorious to me. I expected Prague to look much different and I saw that this is a very rich city. However, you can find there some restaurants where you don't have to pay much for dinner.

The third day we visited one of the districts of Prague, Hradczany. The weather was very gloomy that day but I had an umbrella in case of rain so it didn't disturb me much. We had a chance to see the change of the guard and some more beautiful cathedrals. Then we had some free time in Prague so finally we could go shopping. Unfortunately the prices of clothes were too high for me so I only bought gifts for my family. We had a meeting at 7 p.m. and we set out to Poland. I was at home the next day at about 4 p.m. It was worth seeing Prague and I would like to come back there any time.

If you ever have opportunity to visit Prague, do not even think it over too long and just go there. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Marta

P.S. I'm sending you some pictures as attachments, I bet you'll like it.

A letter to a friend

Dear Gosia,

Thanks for your last letter. It was nice to hear from you and to read what you've already planned for our meeting. But you know, I have a few more questions about it.

You've written that it's not too expensive to find me a place to study, but how much would it be approximately? I can't wait for the trips you've mentioned. My bags will probably be full of clothes, so maybe you could suggest what I should pack. After all, you're the one experienced in such trips. Do I need to bring any equipment with me to go sailing and camping? I'm afraid I don't have any.

As for the foods, don't trouble your mum to prepare anything special for me. I'll eat whatever she'll make. But anyway, there's one more thing. We haven't exchanged our photos yet so why don't we do it now? It would be difficult to recognize each other only having a description of our appearance. You'll find my photo in the envelope and I'm waiting for yours.

I can't wait to see you. Write back when you have time.
Lots of love,
Marta
