Describe the control measures in place in a custodial environment P3
Task:-
You are to produce a report that covers the following criteria:-
Describe the control measures in place in a custodial environment you must include the following:-
Responding to breaches of prison rules e.g. fighting
Prison officers will often be sent in teams of 3, with another officer who will be used to control prisoner’s legs if it is necessary, any force used on a prisoner will be reasonable, appropriate and only if necessary in certain circumstances like: removing a prisoner from a cell who will not cooperate.
Use of verbal cautions
Verbal cautions are used when prison officer thinks that it is enough of a punishment for the prisoner, other punishments that can be given verbally:
· Being confined to cell.
· No association allowed.
· Lose privileges.
· Moved off the wing they are being held in.
· Lose earnings from helping out around the prison.
Use of report writing
Reports are used to deal with some charges against prisoners under the age of 21, formal prisoner discipline processes are known as adjudicators who can do all the stuff others can but they also can give an extra 42 days in prison.
Adjudication & punishment
Adjudication aims to help maintain discipline, control and order and help keep the custodial environment safe, they also make sure that the use of authority of prison officers is fair and justifiable. Punishments that can be given:
Incentives to behave e.g. I.E.P scheme
The I.E.P scheme is broken down into 3 levels
· Basic: this is the most basic stuff you can have in a prison this is for prisoners that misbehave a lot.
· Standard: this is the standard for when you just go into the prison this is where
· Enhanced.
Privileges that can be gained/earned:
· More money.
· More visits.
· Better paid work in the prison.
· In-cell TV/PlayStations.
· Wearing own clothes.
· More time out of cell.
Assessing the need for control and restraint
Prison officers are told not to use force unless it is needed to be used, when custodial care staff uses force they are only to use enough to bring the situation back down to a reasonable level so that force is no longer needed.
Control and restraint techniques & appropriate techniques for situation
All staff gets trained in restraint techniques e.g.
‘Breakaway’ these techniques allow a officer to break away from attackers when the officer is on their own
.
‘Control and restraint’ this allows the officer with removing a prisoner from their cell, removing a prisoner from a vehicle and searching a prisoner who is not cooperating.
There are a few staff members who learn advanced control and restraint they qualify to carry handcuffs and will mostly watch over planned situations that have a high chance of needing control and restrain techniques to help solve the situation.
