Welcome To GUITAR COMBOS
Thank you very much for purchasing GUITAR COMBOS. This series of three different
vintage amp simulators gives you great tone – for a lot less hassle and expense than
finding (and maintaining) the originals.
1. Software Updates
Native Instruments is always trying to raise the bar for software performance. Before
installing GUITAR COMBOS, check the README file for any late-breaking information
that applies to your product. Then, after installing and registering GUITAR COMBOS,
go to www.native-instruments.com to check for updates (located in the site’s Support
section), as well as any goodies, extras, or special deals.

GUITAR COMBOS Meets Computer
Sound Card Setup
4. Select the Sample Rate . Choose
44100, because virtually all sound
cards support that rate (however, if
you’re aware of how to use higher sam-
ple rates, they do give better fidelity).
Reproducing a vintage guitar amp’s
tone is a very demanding task, so you
need a well-tuned system with proper
audio hardware. The manual (as well as
the NI web site) contains much infor-
mation on optimizing your setup. While
we want to get you up and running as
fast as possible, if you encounter prob-
lems while going through this welcome
section, please read the manual.
To simplify your introduction, we’ll ex-
plore GUITAR COMBOS in stand-alone
mode.
1. Open the GUITAR COMBOS program
(double-click on the GUITAR COMBOS
desktop shortcut, or on the Guitar
Combos.exe program).
GUITAR COMBOS sounds great – so if
it doesn’t, or if there’s excessive delay
between playing a note and hearing it,
the manual will show you how to tweak
your system for best results.
2. You may now see a dialog box that
complains about something, like how
your audio is set up. If so, click on OK
and a screen should appear where you
can adjust your audio setup. Otherwise,
go File > Audio+MIDI Settings.
5. Choose the Output Device. Caution:
If you’re not using Core Audio, select
a driver written specifically for your
sound card or audio interface . Avoid a
“generic” driver, like “ASIO DirectX”
or “ASIO Multimedia.” Choose a driver
that includes the sound card or audio
interface model number, or the name of
the interface’s manufacturer.
Okay…grab your guitar, and let’s go!
The Right Stuff
Here’s your pre-flight checklist (for
more information, see Appendix A in
the manual).
You need a low-latency audio inter-
face that uses ASIO or Core Audio
drivers.
Plug into an audio input on your in-
terface designed specifically for gui-
tar, or patch a suitable converterbox
(e.g., DI box) between your guitar and
a standard audio interface input.
Disable any “direct monitoring” op-
tions, hardware or software, that
apply to your audio interface (typi-
cally found in a mixer application
that came with your interface).
3. Click on the SoundCard tab. Interface
shows your computer’s interface op-
tions. Choose only ASIO or Core Audio
as the interface type.
6. Click on the Routing tab. It will prob-
ably already have defaulted to setting
the Inputs and Outputs to the left and
right channels of your audio interface.
If not, click on Inputs and assign the
Left input to Input 1, and the Right in-
put to Input 2. Then click on Outputs,
and assign the Left output to Output 1,
and the Right output to Output 2.
Feed your audio interface output
into a monitoring system with a flat
response (mixer, PA, headphones,
etc.). Do not feed GUITAR COMBOS
into a guitar amp – GUITAR COMBOS
already is a guitar amp.

Tune Your Guitar
To activate an effect, click on the
small “LED” in the upper left corner
of the effect. A red LED indicates
the effect is on. If the LED is off, the
effect is off. For example, the follow-
ing picture shows where to turn the
Twang Combo Skreamer effect on
and off.
Any amp sounds better with a well-
tuned guitar, so let’s do it.
7. Skip the MIDI tab for now – let’s just
make some sounds. So, click on OK.
You’re set up and ready to play!
To enable the tuner, click on the
Tuner button.
Play a single note (preferably using
the neck pickup). The note name
nearest to the detected pitch shows
up to the right of the Tuner button.
If the LED lights to the right of the
middle calibration, the note is sharp.
If the LED lights to the left of the
middle calibration, the note is flat.
Adjust the tuning until the LED lines
up with the middle calibration.
Well, we’re off to a good start, but haven’t
even come close to finding out all the
cool things about GUITAR COMBOS:
You can control it with MIDI, insert it
into a variety of host programs, auto-
mate parameters, and get about as
deep as you want.
Sound Check
Check Out the Presets
Meanwhile, though, have a great time
playing some great sounds. We sincerely
hope that you find GUITAR COMBOS’s
tone and flexibility to be a source of
musical inspiration.
Move your mouse over the speaker grille,
click on a preset (choose one labeled
HB if your guitar has humbucking pick-
ups, or SC for single coil pickups), and
play your guitar. You should be hearing
some pretty cool sounds.
Go Demo Player > Blues Example.
mp3. This sound runs through
GUITAR COMBOS, so turn up the
volume on your monitoring system.
If you hear the demo example, then
GUITAR COMBOS’s output is connect-
ed properly to your interface. Now go
Demo Player > Stop.
Now click on other presets to audition
them. If the presets seem to disappear,
don’t worry – just move your mouse over
the amp and they’ll return. By clicking
on View > Disable Preset List Fading you
can turn this feature off.

To change the setting of a virtual
knob, click on it, then drag up to
increase the value and down to de-
crease.
