A sentence tells a complete thought. Words that do
not tell a complete thought are not a sentence.
Practice Write each complete sentence.

Kinds of Sentences
Every sentence begins with a capital letter.
Kind of Sentence
Example
A statement tells something.
It ends with a period.
F irefighters put out fires .
A question asks
something. It ends with a
question mark.
W hy do firefighters wear
boots ?
A command tells someone
to do something. It ends
with a period.
W atch the firefighters
climb the ladder .
An exclamation shows
strong feeling. It ends with
an exclamation mark.
A t last, the fire is out !

Every sentence has two parts.
The subject tells who or what does something.
The predicate tells what the subject does or is.

Combining Sentences
Use the word and to join two sentences that have
the same subjects or the same predicates.
