Materials Required:
Fimo 20mm (approx.) cubes:
Red, White, Yellow, Green.
Fimo the size (approx.) of a twenty pence piece:
Black, Navy Blue.
Craft knife.
Very fine paintbrush.
Acrylic paints: Green, Red.
Fimo gloss varnish.
70mm length of coloured thread.
Baking paper or foil (to bake model on).
Glue.
To Model The Clown:
All the pictures of the components are actual
size to use as a guide. Make the model straight
onto the baking paper or foil to avoid having to
move it later. Bake the model in the oven at 130° C
or Gas Mark 1 2 for 20 minutes. Start by making
the basic body following the steps below.

Break off a small ball of
white, flatten and shape so
that the top of the head is
slightly pointed.
Take a large piece of red
and flatten into a rectangle
25mm x 35mm x 1mm.
Cut angles and a small slit
to form trouser shape.
Take two small balls of
white, flatten to form
hands and slip under the
sleeves, cutting a small ‘v’
shape in the flat hand to
hold the balloon string.

Flatten a large piece of
yellow into a rectangle
20mm x 40mm x 1mm for
the shirt. Cut to round off
one corner for the shoulder
and pull the other corner
to make the out-stretched
arm.
Flatten a small piece of
yellow into a rectangle
10mm x 20mm x 1mm and
cut in half to make socks.
Place one sock carefully
under each trouser leg and
slip the top edge of the
trousers over the yellow
shirt, making sure you
keep the sleeves free.
Gently press the head up
against the top of the shirt.
Flatten a small ball of
green to the size of a ten
pence piece. Cut in half
and with a sharp craft
knife cut hair shapes. Press
these gently to sides of
head.

Finishing Touches:
When the
model is cold,
paint on the
spots and stripes
with acrylic
paints. After the
paint has dried
(it is best to
leave it to dry
overnight),
varnish the
clown. When
dry glue the
clown to the
card, making
sure to leave
room for the
balloon.
Glue the
piece of thread
to the back of
the balloon
before glueing
the balloon into
place. Add a tiny
amount of glue
to the thread
where it fits
into the clown’s
hand.

Gently press the end of a
very fine paintbrush into
the face to form two eye
sockets. Take a small ball
of red and add a nose to
the face. Roll a very fine
sausage shape in red and
attach to form a mouth.
Take two tiny balls of black
and insert eyes into the
sockets. (It is easier to
paint the facial features!).
Similarly, roll two more
thin green sausages, flatten
slightly and attach to the
model to make the braces,
adding two tiny balls of
yellow for the buttons.
Make the holes in the
buttons with a fine needle.

For the crown of the hat
take a small ball of red,
flatten into a circle, then
cut in half and place one
half at the top of the head,
overlapping it slightly.
With the other half make a
15mm sausage in red and
attach it to the head to
form the brim of the hat.
For the clown’s bow-tie,
make a tiny blue rectangle
and cut into a bow shape.
Wrap a tiny flattened
sausage of blue around the
centre and fix the bow-tie
to his neck.

Tips:
Warm the
piece of Fimo
you are going
to use in your
hands before
attempting any modelling.
Use a ‘wet wipe’ to clean your fingertips
between colours, and model white items first.
To ensure the paint adheres more effectively,
wipe the model over with a cotton bud dipped in
acetone, then allow to dry for a few moments.
Acetone can be bought at most big chemists, very
cheaply and in handy sized bottles.
Acrylic paints can be bought in small pots and
assorted colours from craft shops avoiding the
need to buy the large tubes stocked by art shops.
If you use baking paper to make your model
on instead of foil, you can draw onto it the size
and shape you have available on your blank card
to make sure the finished model will fit.

Roll two thin sausages of
green, flatten and form
into boots. Attach to socks
pressing gently, then add
two tiny sausages of green
to form the edges of the
boots.
Finally, take a ball of green
and flatten, pulling one
end slightly to form a
balloon shape. Add a tiny
blob of green to the end to
form the knot. Now bake
the model (see the first
page of this article for
instructions).

Place tiny flattened
sausages of red at the
bottom of the trouser legs
to form ‘turn-ups’.
