HOW TO MAKE GOOD USE OF A DICTIONARY
When we look up (=sprawdzać) words in a dictionary we must remember that words have more than one meaning. That's why it's necessary to check words twice (=2x): first, find an English equivalent in the Polish-English section, then, check this equivalent in the English-Polish/English section to see if it is the right one.
Example 1: 'złożyć podanie'
You don't know how to say 'złożyć'.
STEP 1
Look it up in the Polish-English section. Here are some possible equivalents:
· fold
· put together
· submit
STEP 2
Look up the 3 equivalents in the English-Polish. In a good dictionary, there are usually example sentences (=zdania).
He folded the newspaper.
I don't know how to put this table together.
All applications must be submitted by Monday.
STEP 3
Now we know that the right equivalent in this context is 'submit'
złożyć podanie = submit an application
Example 2: 'zmienić zamek (w kurtce)'
Look up 'zamek' in the Polish-English section. Here are 3 basic equivalents:
· lock
· castle
· zip (zipper)
Look up the 3 equivalents in the English-Polish/English.
I heard someone turn a key in the lock
The visited an old castle.
I can't open my bag - the zip has stuck.
Now we know that the right equivalent in this context is 'zip'
zmienić zamek = change the zip
