Pronunciation Guide
Yiddish is a very old language.
For nearly 1000 years, Yiddish
was the main language spoken
by Ashkenazic (Eastern European)
Jews. While it sounds similar to
German, it is written in Hebrew
characters. Unlike the written
Hebrew, the vowels do not appear
under the letters, but rather cer-
tain Hebrew letters take on vowel
sounds in Yiddish. The Hebrew
letter “alef” is the Yiddish vowel
for the sound “ah” or “aw.”
The Hebrew letter “ayin” is the
Yiddish vowel for the sound of
“eh.” And, as in Hebrew, the letter
“vav” is the sound of “uh” and
the letter “yud” is the sound of
“ee.” The English transliterations
have been written phonetically.
The consonant pair “kh” is
pronounced like the “ch” in
“Bach.” If you can read Hebrew,
you can read Yiddish so have fun
sounding out the Yiddish words!
