Prologue
should’ve stayed with the guide, but no, I had to
take a stroll while the others set up camp. Smart,
Brandon. Real smart.
Brandon bent over the lion and wondered
which frightened him more—touching a wild
animal in the middle of Africa without even a stick
for protection, or the probable loss of sanity in
attempting to help the beast. Yet when he’d seen
the huge animal lying on its side, panting while a
swarm of flies and other insects feasted on the
blood oozing from the gash in its leg, he hadn’t
given his safety a second thought.
“Hang in there, big guy.” He removed his shirt
and tore it into strips as the lion’s growl rumbled
through its body. “How about we make a deal? I
won’t hurt you and you won’t hurt me. Sound
fair?”
When the creature lifted its head and its
unblinking gaze found Brandon’s, he couldn’t
help but imagine that the lion had understood
him. “I tell you what. I’ll call you Victor because

you remind me of my father. Trust me. He was
quite the lion of a man. Plus, if I name you, maybe
I won’t notice the acid tearing an ulcer in the
lining of my stomach.”
When he lowered his head, Victor seemed
content with his new name as Brandon began
winding the impromptu bandage around the
lion’s leg. He worked as quickly as he could, not
wanting to press his luck with the animal’s
willingness to be touched. Although he’d
wrapped the shirt around the leg several times,
blood continued to seep through the material,
coloring the white a dark red.
“Okay, Victor, I’m finished. You rest easy and
I’ll go fetch one of the men along with a
tranquilizer gun.” He rose very slowly and
pivoted on his heel to walk—
don’t run!
—in the
direction of the camp.
“Little Man should learn not to turn his back on
the King of Beasts.”
Brandon swung toward the sound, ready to see
the lion charging him, and gawked at the old man
sitting cross-legged where the lion had lain. “What
the hell?”
The many wrinkles etched in the ancient
person’s face deepened as his cackle wafted over
Brandon. He was dressed in a loincloth and had
jewelry made of bones and stones looped around
neck and arms, adorning his frail skinny body.
