G-VOX RIFFS 2.0 FREQUENTLY-ASKED QUESTIONS & QUICK START GUIDE NOTE: Please contact us if you have any questions/problems/comments! Phone: 215-922-0880 Fax: 215-922-7230 email: info@lyrrus.com for sales/information ts@lyrrus.com for technical support Postal: Lyrrus, Inc. 400 Green Street Philadelphia, PA 19123 Q1: Why don't I hear any sound? A1: If you're not hearing any sound when you hit the Riff Play button (that's the one to the right of the speaker icon button), go into the Utilities menu. Select Preferences. In the MIDI Output field, make sure that you select the correct MIDI driver. If you have a SoundBlaster or SoundBlaster clone sound card, you can choose the "Voyetra Super SAPI FM synth" driver. Generally, you want a "synth" driver. A "MIDI OUT" driver is usually used to communicate with an external sound source, like a keyboard or MIDI module. Only choose this kind of driver if you have such a unit connected externally to your sound card. If you STILL don't hear anything, try turning up your speakers. After that, if you hear music playing faintly, open the mixer program that came with your sound card. In the mixer, increase the volume of the MIDI ouput. Q2: Why can't I change the tempo of the playback? A2: You CAN change the tempo of the riff's MIDI playback (see the Riff Play button in the Riffs Quick Start Guide) using the Tempo Slider. But you can't change the tempo of the Sample Play. Sample Play plays an actual recording of the riff, so its tempo cannot be changed. Q3: Why does it sound like a piano when I hit the Riff Play button? A3: The MIDI playback when you hit the Riff Play button uses the sounds that are built into your sound card. In the Preferences dialog, found in the Utilities menu, you can change the number in the Patch (voice) field to use different sounds on your sound card. Make sure that you have the Send Patch Number field checked. STARTING RIFFS 2.0 (WINDOWS) 1. To run Riffs, double-click on the Riffs Collection icon. This will run the Riffs program and automatically open the Riffs Collection library. 2. Once the main screen appears, select Preferences from the Utilities menu. 3. In the Preferences dialog: Make sure that Hardware Monitor is not selected (this option is only for using the G-VOX hardware with Riffs). In the MIDI Output field, select the driver appropriate for your sound card's MIDI playback. For many SoundBlaster cards, the driver is "Voyetra Super-Sapi FM." For other cards, it may be a driver that says "FM synth." Unless you have a keyboard or other MIDI device externally connected to your sound card, a MIDI Out driver is usually not the right one. In the Octave field, change 0 to -1. Hit OK when finished. STARTING RIFFS 2.0 (MACINTOSH) Double-click on the Riffs Collection icon. This will run the Riffs program and automatically open the Riffs Collection library. USING RIFFS 2.0 (WINDOWS & MACINTOSH) 1. To hear a digital recording of the riff on the screen, click on the Sample Play button (it is the speaker icon). 2. To step through the riff note by note, click the Riff Play button (it is a single arrow pointing to the right). While the riff is playing, you will see the bouncing ball move across the notations and the fingerings appear on the fingerboard. NOTE: If you don't hear anything when you hit Riff Play, check to see that you have selected the correct driver in Preferences. If you have the right driver but you still don't hear anything, run the mixer program that comes with your sound card and increase the volume of the MIDI playback. 3. To select another riff, go to the Riffs menu. At the bottom of the Riffs menu, highlight the item "Riffs." Select from the list of riffs that will appear. 4. Use the Tempo Slider (lower left of the screen) to adjust the tempo of the riff playback. This will adjust the speed of the synthesis playback (Play button), not the digital sample playback (speaker button). 5. See the Riff Info dialog (found in the Riffs menu) for written info on each riff. BUTTONS & CONTROLS IN RIFFS 2.0 (WINDOWS & MACINTOSH) - from left to right Tempo Slider Adjusts the speed of riff playback (Riff Play button) and the Metronome. This will not adjust the speed of the digital sample playback (Sample Play button). Metronome The Metronome clicks and flashes in tempo with the riff playback. You can also click on it to start and stop it when the riff is not playing. Sample Play Button (speaker icon) Plays a digital recording of the riff. Can be stopped with the Stop button. Riff Play Button Steps through the riff note by note, playing through the MIDI Output driver selected in Preferences. Can be paused or stopped. Step Play Button Shows you the first note and waits for you to play the correct note on your guitar before moving on. This feature requires the G-VOX Hardware that connects your guitar to your computer. Video Play Button Plays a digital video from G-VOX CD-ROMs. Control Panel Buttons -- Rewind & Fast Forward For moving through a riff when paused during Riff Play. Control Panel Buttons -- Stop & Pause For stopping a riff during Riff Play and Sample Play, or pausing during Riff Play. =============================================================================== G-VOX Riffs 2.2 for Windows Readme File =============================================================================== Version 2.20 Bld 005 Released 11/12/96 To Install G-VOX Riffs 2.2 for Windows: 1) Start Windows 2) Insert this disk into drive A: or B: 3) In the Program Manager select File|Run. Selecting the mouse COM port may cause loss of mouse action. Updated In This Version: ----------------------- 11/11/96 -------------------------- Fixed problem with serializing large libraries. =============================================================================== For Systems With Non-standard COM ports: Windows may make incorrect assumptions for the IRQ settings for non-standard COM (serial) ports. Non-standard COM ports are ones that use a different IRQ than 4 (for COM1 and COM3) or 3 (for COM2 and COM4) or systems that have COM ports that are non-sequential (for example, COM1, COM2, and COM4 present, but no COM3). In these cases use the Ports Applet in the Control Panel in Windows to change the IRQ for the non-standard or non-sequential COM port. For example, if COM1, COM2 and COM4 are present but not COM3, Windows will assume that the third serial port that exists on the system is COM3, when in fact it is COM4. Normally COM3 uses IRQ 4. Since the hardware serial port is actually COM4 (using IRQ 3), you must set the IRQ for COM3 to IRQ3. This serial port can then be accessed as COM3 and it will use the proper IRQ. =============================================================================== Care and Feeding of COM ports: Since the design of the PC does not allow IRQs to be shared, when installing or configuring more than two serial port on a PC, be sure to select settings so that your mouse (if it is a serial mouse) and the G-VOX beltpack do not share an IRQ. For example, if the mouse is on COM1 (IRQ 4), then connect the G-VOX beltpack to COM2 (IRQ 3) or COM4 (IRQ 3), but not to COM3 (IRQ 4). The G-VOX driver that is supplied with Riffs for Windows will normally warn you that a conflict has occured, but under some circumstances the mouse may cease to respond after Riffs has been started. If this occurs, restart Windows and select another COM port for the G-VOX beltpack. Be sure to physically connect the beltpack to the corresponding serial port! =============================================================================== Support for early Basics Sampler CDROM: Some early pressings of the Basics Sampler CDROM are missing an identification file that Riffs uses to locate the Basics CDROM. In order to use these CDROMs with Riffs, add the following line to the [Preferences] section of the riffs.ini file, located in the \rfw20 directory: IDPath=NoID To do this using Notepad, start Notepad, open the riffs.ini file and add this line to the end of the file. Save the file. The Basics CDROM will work properly the next time you run Riffs. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== End of Readme.Txt ===============================================================================
